First Look at God Of War Ragnarök revealed

By Ryan EasbySeptember 10, 2021

After months of speculation, theory-crafting and desperate waiting, we’ve finally been treated to our first proper look at gameplay for God Of War Ragnarök, and it looks great.

The game was the closer to Sony’s stellar Playstation Showcase last night, after showcasing the sequel to Insomniac’s Spider-Man game and announcing, among other things, a Knights Of The Old Republic remake. The trailer for the God Of War sequel sets up that this will be taking places years after the events of 2018’s God Of War. The world is freezing over thanks to Fimbulwinter, meaning the trio of Kratos, Atreus and Mimir have to seek new ways of surviving.

We also now from the gameplay trailer you can watch below that the main antagonists of the game will be Freya and Thor, Freya having begun to hate Kratos after what he did to her son Baldur in the previous instalment. There’s also brief glimpses at new enemy types, new attacks that Kratos and Atreus can perform and reintroducing the axe to those who loved the combat in the previous game.

In addition to all of these enticing details, we now know that you’ll be able to visit all nine realms and that previous director Cory Balrog will not be returning for the sequel, instead handing the reigns over to series veteran Eric Williams. Williams has previous experience with the God Of War franchise, so we can rest assured that the series remains in extremely good hands.

Ryan Easby is a writer by trade and by passion. He's been playing video games from a young age, with his introduction to gaming being a SNES, while his peers were playing the original Xbox. If you need to talk about Kingdom Hearts, he's your guy. Can often be found dying repeatedly in a game.
