Tymon Smektała, one of the key creative voices behind the Dying Light franchise, has revealed that he is departing Techland after years working on the beloved zombie franchise.
In a post shared on Twitter/X, Smektała reflected on his time with the studio and thanked the many people across development and publishing that helped shape Dying Light into what it is today. For fans of the series, this definitely feels like the end of an era, especially considering how closely tied Tymon has been to the identity and direction of the franchise over the years.
He also took time to thank the Dying Light community, saying that the passion and feedback from players helped guide the series and push it forward. According to Smektała, the franchise remains in “great hands,” and while he is stepping away from Techland, he is looking forward to experiencing future entries as a fan from the outside.
“After years with Dying Light, I’m moving into a new chapter. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m proud of what we’ve built.
Thank you to all the talented People of Techland I’ve had the chance to work with – across both development and publishing – for the passion, energy, and shared ambition to make Dying Light the ultimate zombie experience. We made it happen, together!
And to our amazing community: your love, engagement, and vocal support have always been our north star. You helped shape what Dying Light became.
The franchise is in great hands, and I’m excited to see it grow even further, and I can’t wait to experience its next chapter as a player. I’ll always root for Dying Light!
Good night, and good luck!”
As for what comes next, Smektała did not reveal any future plans or announce where he is headed. Right now, it sounds like he is simply closing one major chapter before moving on to something new.
Personally, as someone who has spent countless hours with Dying Light and considers it one of my favorite zombie franchises, this one stings a bit. Tymon Smektała was not just another developer attached to the project. He became one of the public faces of the franchise and someone fans associated with the heart of the series. Hopefully whatever comes next for him ends up being just as memorable.
Smektała spent more than 13 years at Techland working on the Dying Light franchise, helping shape the series from its early days into one of the most recognizable zombie-focused action franchises in gaming. Over the years, he became one of the public faces of the series and someone fans closely associated with the direction and identity of Dying Light.
Currently, Techland has not stated who will be replacing Tymon Smektała or temporarily filling his role.
