For months we’ve known that Valve has been working on a new Steam Controller, set to release later in 2026. It would seem that release is getting closer, as YouTube channel TechyTalk managed to get their hands on one early. The video shows the controller both in action and taken apart, and TechyTalk also mentioned that it’s priced at $99.99 USD.
The video has since been removed, but as we all know, nothing truly disappears from the internet. It’s been saved, and we can all see why this new controller is generating so much hype.
As for why only one person appears to have early access, it’s likely that more do, except Valve probably had an embargo in place for when the controller could be publicly shown. Whether this video prompts others to come forward remains to be seen.
The new Steam Controller features:
- 2x trackpads
- D-pad
- 2x analog sticks with TMR sensors
- A/B/X/Y buttons, slightly larger than those on the original Steam Controller and most current controllers on the market
- Left and right bumpers and triggers
- Four rear buttons
- 6-axis gyroscope
- Haptics
- No audio jack
The omission of an audio jack is a bit disappointing, and it would seem that the audio jack is doing the same disappearing act that it has been doing on smartphones. All in all, TechyTalk stated he was impressed with the controller and its quality. Of course, this is just a quick look, that said, there are still some things left unanswered, such as the polling rate and battery life.
While not mentioned in the video, the Steam Controller will also feature haptics. So, for those who enjoy the sensation of their controller shaking violently, it will be there.
Lastly, that price may put off some people. While the added features are a nice to have, that price point puts it right in the middle of a regular Xbox or PlayStation controller and just a few dollars away from a premium controller from 3rd party companies. Priced at $100, that’s going to cause some people to pause before pulling the trigger. As for when the controller will be released, we still don’t know.
At best, this is an early glimpse, and I’m looking forward to more creators getting access so we can learn more and hopefully get a release date for the new Steam Controller.
