While I’m not at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, nor was I inside the Marvel panel, there is plenty to talk about when it comes to Avengers: Doomsday and the footage that was shown. I normally don’t cover every MCU theory that starts making the rounds, but the hype is real, and Marvel may have just shut down one of the biggest rumors surrounding Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
Ever since Downey was announced as Doom, fans have been trying to figure out how this would work. Is he an evil Tony Stark variant? Is time travel involved? Did an alternate version of Iron Man somehow become Doctor Doom? The speculation has been nonstop. However, the footage shown during the Marvel panel appears to make one thing much clearer: Robert Downey Jr. is playing Victor von Doom, not Tony Stark gone bad.
During the footage, Sue Storm narrates to a room full of heroes, explaining that Victor used to be kind and caring before everything he loved was taken from him. She knew he was lost, but she didn’t realize just how broken he had become. Reed Richards is then shown confronting Doom and asking him what he has done. What caught my attention is that neither Sue nor Reed calls him Doom. They call him Victor. That suggests Sue and Reed know exactly who he is, that there is history between them, and that Marvel intends to preserve the classic rivalry between Reed Richards and Victor von Doom.
Now, I could be completely off base. This scene could take place later in the movie, after Reed and the others have discovered Doom’s real identity. Marvel is very good at showing footage without giving audiences the full context. Still, Sue’s narration and Reed calling him Victor make it sound like this version of Doom already has a connection to the Fantastic Four. That would mean no evil Iron Man variant, at least based on what Marvel has shown so far.
Downey looking like Tony Stark could still play a role in the movie. It would be difficult for the Avengers to face someone with the same face as the man who sacrificed himself to save the universe. However, Doom can look like Tony while still being Victor von Doom. Personally, I’m glad Marvel appears to be going in that direction. Doom deserves to be his own character, and his rivalry with Reed Richards is too important to throw away for an evil Iron Man twist.
Marvel also revealed a new poster showing off Doom and his stylish armor. I like the design, but I have questions. Why are the two pieces holding his cloak in place different symbols? Are they runes? Similar markings also appear on his gauntlets, and there is a band wrapped around his left arm that looks like it could mean something.
Either way, I already have my tickets for Avengers: Doomsday, and now I’m waiting patiently for December 18, 2026, to get here. And by patiently, I mean not patiently at all.
Damn it, why isn’t this movie out already so I can stop asking questions?
