The Story
The sixteenth volume of In Another World with My Smartphone has Touya fiddling with the dungeons he discovered on the island. He decides to name them Amaterasu, Tsukiyomi, and Susanoo…. Dattebayo…
With the dungeons taken care of, he’s about to go do whatever it is that Touya does when a message comes through that a dragon, or more specifically, a wyvern, is attacking. Touya makes short work of it and discovers a needle in its head. We get a bit more backstory on Dr. Babylon and her closest rival, but nobody can figure out where the needle came from, so it’s time to summon the Azure Monarch! Yep… Touya’s collection of summoned beasts increases by 1!
Through the Monarch and a conversation with a Red Dragon, they learn of a demi-human named The Dragon King who has been using the needles. Just as they are formulating a plan to deal with him, a horde of dragons is heading straight for Brunhild! Touya could handle them all himself, but he’d rather have his knights do the work because word of his men defeating a horde of dragons would stave off future invasions from other countries.
The dragons get dealt with, so they pay a visit to the Dragon King. I don’t think I need to tell you how that ends! Once we wrap this up, we get a visit from Leen. Word gets around that adventurers have gone missing in Touya’s dungeons, so he investigates only to uncover a kidnapping ring. So, now we have to deal with that, and if you know how Touya operates, then I’m sure you already know how this arc ends up.
We finish our volume with finding another piece of Babylon… and, of course, this leads to Touya getting his hands on an artifact that just gives him even more of an advantage… as if his smartphone wasn’t good enough already!
Characters
So, we’ve added The Azure Monarch, now renamed to Luli, four rookie adventurers in Lop, Fran, Klaus, and Eon, and a new guardian of Babylon named Lileleleparshe (or Parshe for short) to Touya’s ever-growing ranks and/or harem.
Luli is wise and relies on facts and information rather than instinct. She has a bitter rivalry with Kohaku because of it. However, in typical fashion, just when we thought Kohaku was a guy, it turns out all of the summoned beasts are female, because why not limit Touya’s harem to just humans? Let’s throw beasts in there, too! Even though Luli was painted as this brash and egotistical beast, she was rather tame. Sure, she was quite confident in herself, but she wasn’t nearly as bad as Kohaku painted her to be. If anything, she is loyal, and she should be a great addition to Touya’s never-ending uber-powerful allies… as if he needs the help.
The four adventurers are just eager little kids, but they showed their mettle after enacting Touya’s plan to be “captured” by the slave traders, only to rescue everyone on their ship. I’m sure they will be useful little tools in the future!
Finally, we have Parshe… another girl who got scolded by Touya for being clumsy and dropping some familiar artifacts into the world. She does the needful and kisses him, and is now part of the harem. The storehouse is now his, and that means we have access to a lot of things… things that are just perfect for future plot devices!
Final Thoughts
I’m glad that Touya decided to sit out the fight against the invading dragons, thus giving us a glimpse at a real fight. I know it’s comical for Touya to just bust out Slip or Gravity and end things instantly, but I would like to see some real action from time to time, so having him not only sit out, but also forbid the use of Frame Gear was a nice touch. The “battle” against the Dragon King, however, did end abruptly, but not in the way I thought it was going to. I have to admit that I laughed pretty hard at the suddenness of it, along with Touya and Luli’s reactions.
The slave trader arc was short, but it gave us a glimpse at four new characters, all of which will probably play roles in upcoming battles as Touya is dead set on having them gain experience… hence my “useful little tools” comment from earlier. With the cast as large as this, unless they have specific chapters that focus on them, I can’t see these four being any more than background characters; used whenever needed… aka… useful little tools!
Now that we have the storehouse, I’m sure we will do more exploring as Touya just starts handing out items and artifacts to bolster everything and anything. That is where we left off, and one of those artifacts will probably set the stage for what is to come.
