Yesterday, Square Enix announced they were going to host a live stream for Dragon Quest’s 40th anniversary. That live stream was this morning, and it had a few announcements for the series, with the biggest one being right out of the gate. Dragon Quest XII.
The team has shared one of the reasons that the game has taken so long before they got a new trailer, since its announcement, they weren’t sure about the direction of the game. So they decided to restart the project in its entirety with a new story titled Beyond Dreams. We finally have a new trailer, but there is some sour news that this game is not close to release because the project is getting restarted anew. Yuji Horii confirms that the designs are still the characters Akira Toriyama designed with the music of Koichi Sugiyama.
The narrative is tied to dreams. Our protagonist in this game is besieged by dreams, and he has to figure out what they mean. Yuji Horii says that beyond dreams is surely light and not a world of darkness. If that is true, what he means we will have to see as the game progresses further. There are two other playable characters we see in the trailer that make up the three party members. A girl who is a scavenger and mechanic. And a dragonborn boy knight who is gearing up to fight for some kingdom we do not know about.
Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams is in active development, and it looks really good. It is worth noting that no combat was actually shown, but we did see some exploration gameplay of the main protagonist. I doubt that Dragon Quest’s main entry will change too much in the battle system since the Dragon Quest games have been very consistent in the turn-based mechanics and balance throughout the series.
Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams has no release date, but we do have confirmation of it making headway now as a playable title.
