Anime has a genre that is super popular called Isekai. It has so many different anime in the genre now that it’s a joke to send someone to another world in different ways. One of the most popular jokes in media is Truck-Kun just constantly sending people to other worlds, which even became an anime of itself. Now we get a video game where you get to play as Truck-kun sending people into other worlds called Truck-Kun is Supporting me From Another World?!

The beginning of Truck-kun is Supporting Me From Another World?! shows a woman who just got the promotion she always wanted, only to get hit by the truck-kun driver accidentally. While you, as the driver, are sad about this but also not wanting to get caught, you hear a person talking to the driver. That person is the lady who just got hit by the truck, Carissa. She has been isekai’d into a fantasy world and has to take down the skeleton king to find a portal of resurrection that might put her back into the real world. Her request for Truck-kun is to give her experience points and monsters to fight by driving into more people and putting them into the alternate world.

The Good

The gameplay loop of Truck-kun is Supporting me from Another World?! is addicting. You will be given objectives on the top right of the screen, and when you fulfill those objectives, you get stars, more game time, or both. Objectives can be simple ones like run into 5 pedestrians, or more complicated ones like find and destroy a cement mixer. You are playing as the driver of Truck-kun, meaning it is all about the driving. You can smash into pretty much anything in this game. Buildings or mountains will not get moved or impacted, but you can destroy chairs, streetlights, tables, market stands, cars, parked cars, police cars, and pretty much any small or medium item you lay your eyes on.

Each round or outing consists of 90-second increments. You can find potions that lie around the town of Wenvale. These potions increase the 90 seconds on your timer. It is worthwhile to find these potions if you need some more time to finish your objectives. The spots these potions spawn at are all the same, so if you memorize the layout of Wenvale and do a route to get all the potions, it can add a substantial amount of extra time to your outing.

One of the big goals of the game is to accumulate stars. You gain stars by completing objectives or by helping Carissa defeat enemies on the bottom of the screen. Carissa will be traveling in Talinfold. If you hit pedestrians, they turn into monsters in Talinfold. If you hit objects, they turn into energy for Carissa. If you max out her energy bar, you can honk with your truck and have her demolish a ton of enemies on the bottom. After every five enemies are defeated in Talinfold, you will gain a star.

The controls for driving Truck-kun are pretty simple. You use the right trigger to drive, the left trigger to brake and reverse, the X button to honk and have Carissa use her special power, the A button to boost, and the B button to drift. Like Mario Kart, if you hold the drift button during a turn long enough, you can let go to apply a boost to the truck. If you feel like the turn isn’t fast enough for you, drifting definitely helps the truck feel better to turn left or right.

When you finish up objectives, you will get heat represented by fire symbols on the right side of the screen. When a fire fills up, your heat level increases, which puts you on the radar of the police. Police will start to show up from random directions to try and bring you to a stop. The more heat you are in, the more often police cars will show up to try and stop you.

The Bad

Having police in Truck-kun is Supporting me from Another World?! does add some nice friction, but it also adds an element of no control too. When police cars show up, it is literally out of nowhere; they will pop up from wherever. Ordinarily, in outings, this isn’t that big of an issue, but sometimes it can cause you to miss a jump or a pedestrian you were going to hit. For example, one of my objectives was to hit a billboard. So I went to make the jump, and a police car spawned right next to the billboard and drove up to me, messing up the jump. I totally biffed hitting the billboard and had to drive all the way back up to hit it again.

There are some milestone missions that I feel are very dependent on the luck you can get in an outing. For one example. One of the milestone missions is “Finish 25 objectives in a single outing”. Outings are 90 seconds. And these objectives can be easy, but some can be much longer. Like jumping 2000 meters. Or drift for 20 seconds. Note that some of these do give more time to the outing, but if you get one like do 3 deliveries, that will take up a considerable amount of time where you are only working on that single objective. You have to hope that the next objective that shows up is an easy one that can help you add more objectives to your total stack to finish the outing with. I just do not like having that as a necessity. Most of the milestone missions are actually really good progression missions. Just some of them make it more luck-based than play-based.

Wenvale is the only map that is in the game. For the most part, I don’t have that big of a problem with that; it’s just that it can get really repetitive. Luckily, the game is only three to four hours long; otherwise, you could easily get bored with Wenvale. Hopefully more support is given for the game so more maps and locations come about. Or maybe a procedurally generated mode that can turn this into a roguelite experience since the core gameplay is good.

The Verdict

I had a blast with Truck-kun is Supporting me from Another World?! I had a few nitpicks with objectives and the map, but overall this was a fun game. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who wants to experience life as Truck-kun. Also, it would be fun to grab if you just want to smash a truck with cartoon physics into anything and everything you see.
