Sonic the Hedgehog “Event Film” Announced For 2028

What kind of "event" are we talking here?
By Todd BlackDecember 1, 2025
Sonic The Hedgehog 4

It’s been fascinating seeing the growth and evolution of the Sonic the Hedgehog live-action franchise. It started in 2020 after a serious delay due to fan backlash to how Sonic looked. However, the film itself was quality, and built itself up from there to becoming arguably the most consistent video game movie franchise ever! Yes, we know it’s a very small list, but it matters! Currently, we’re awaiting more on the 4th film in the franchise, which is set to arrive in 2027. However, Paramount revealed today that another movie will come out in 2028…

Specifically, as noted by Variety, they labeled the film a “Sonic Universe Event Film,” and it’ll drop on December 22nd, 2028.

That’s honestly all the information we have on it, but it says a lot that Paramount thinks it can go back-to-back years with Sonic films and they’ll both be big. If you recall, the teaser at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 showcased the arrival of Metal Sonic and Amy Rose, as well as confirmation that Shadow was still alive.

So, if we’re “connecting the dots,” it could be that the 4th movie builds up the new arrivals and ends with a cliffhanger of a dark future (possibly headed up by Robotnik), and then Shadow will arrive once more in the “event film” to help set things right.

We’ll keep you posted when more information drops!
