The Story
We open up with the news that Nozomu is going to be spending a lot more time with Sou and her family because his father transferred him to a new school near her house without even telling him! Of course, Sou is ecstatic about this, but finding out AFTER his dad sent a package with all of his clothes and textbooks puts him in quite the low spirits. Sou gets the idea to give him a town tour to help cheer him up, but nothing seems to interest him, which, in turn, bums her out as well.
When Nozomu comes back around, we get treated to a couple of episodic chapters. One of which explores the idea of Sou getting her own smartphone, but her father is too set in his old country ways to understand how this “newfangled technology” works, and therefore, he doesn’t trust it. From there, Sou takes Nozomu out to the woods, where she finds an old abandoned shed. A nearby old man is doing some weeding when he overhears them talking. He thinks it’s great that kids these days still like to do things such as finding secret forts, and decides to support them indirectly… which ends up with a rather weird, yet hilarious twist at the end!
After a struggle to get Sou up for breakfast, Nozomu takes a walk and runs into Takeru. He clears the air with him about Sou proclaiming Nozomu to be her boyfriend, and then something unimaginable happens with him! This leads us into our final episodic story in this volume, where the kids all get together to go into a perceived haunted house as a test of courage. There, Sou and Nozomu end up in a precarious situation where Nozomu says something… Sou takes it one way, when he totally meant it as something else!
Characters
Nozomu gets a little development here, but not much. It happens when he finds out that his dad has suddenly transferred him to a new school without warning. Even though his father profusely apologized for not telling him sooner, he was still bummed out about it. It wasn’t truly said, but it seemed as if Nozomu enjoyed his old school… presumably because he had friends there, so to find out that you not only visited your uncle, but you’re now going to be living there, having no say in the matter, it’s no wonder he got bummed out. Outside of this, there wasn’t much change to him as a character.
The other highlight here was Takeru. He showed a different side to himself, other than being a snot-nosed brat. He does have a sweet side, and we find out that he has a crush on Sou, but the reason why he keeps bullying her is that he gets too tense and embarrassed whenever she is around. He can’t admit his feelings, so that stubbornness turns into bullying. It will be interesting to see where this goes, but even though the obvious ship here is Nozomu x Sou, you have to admit… they’re blood-related, and that is just a bit too taboo. I wonder if this means Takeru has an actual shot?
We also get properly introduced to Aoi, Nozomu’s sister. She is a model and has an upcoming photoshoot, but she decided to drop by… even if it was for the week. She’s a bit outgoing and a tomboy in her own right. She drills Nozomu over the things he’s done, and even questions what Sou means to him. She’s also a wild sleeper with no shame whatsoever. She’s a fun character so far, but you can’t help but feel bad for Nozomu with both Aoi and Sou teasing the ever-living hell out of him.
Final Thoughts
This was another fun volume, and my suspicions about Nozomu getting stuck with Sou were spot-on, although there are some inconsistencies here. First off, did Nozomu’s uncle know about this from the very beginning? If so, why didn’t he say anything? He is a country bumpkin, so maybe he just thought that Nozomu knew all along? Then again, if that were the case, then why didn’t he question why Nozomu packed so lightly for his trip? I get that this is a comedy series and not everything has to make sense, but to be kept in the dark and have your relatives not say a single word about it is a bit too far-fetched. I would have thrown a couple of subtle clues in there to make the reader guess.
The relationship between Sou and Nozomu is as clear as day. Sou definitely has a romantic crush on Nozomu, but Nozomu’s love for Sou is strictly familial. This irks Sou because she knows it, but she can’t just come out and tell him her true feelings. At this point, even if she did, Nozomu would just assume that she meant that she loved him as a cousin and nothing more. Because of this weird dynamic, I don’t think Takeru has the slightest shot in the world at going out with her, but hey… I could be wrong because Nozomu does have to go back home at some point, right? Surely, they won’t actually ship blood-related family members and have Nozomu decide to stay in the countryside from now on, right? I mean, it’s not like he got forcefully transferred to Sou’s school or anything, right?
Oh wait… did I just figure out the endgame here?
Shout-outs to the old man, though. Good to see that some people still think that Sou is a boy, and because of that, decided to leave them a little “gift” for their new hidden hideout. Seriously, what the hell!?
