When Tides Turn, a newly formed independent studio led by Criterion Games co-founder Fiona Sperry, has officially revealed Wreckreation 2, an open-world arcade racing game currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Yep, we’re getting another arcade racing game, but this one is channeling the spirit of Burnout.
Described as a contact-heavy arcade racer, Wreckreation 2 will place players inside a large city featuring urban districts, docks, and a sprawling airport. Races will focus on speed, aggressive driving, shortcuts, crashes, and takedowns, with players encouraged to read their opponents and choose the right moment to strike. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
The game will also include vehicle progression and creative tools that allow players to build, customize, and share their own routes, events, and challenges. When Tides Turn says the game is being developed alongside its community, with player feedback already influencing vehicle handling, progression systems, events, and the design of the open world.
Over the last six months, we’ve been talking directly to players about what they want from a modern arcade driving game, and Wreckreation 2 is the result of those conversations,” said Fiona Sperry, studio head at When Tides Turn. “From handling and progression to events and world design, our community has already helped shape key aspects of the experience. We’re building this game with the players, not just for them.
Wreckreation 2 marks the first project from When Tides Turn, which is made up of developers who previously worked on several arcade racing games, including the Burnout series. The studio says its goal is to create a modern arcade driving experience built around high-speed action, vehicle combat, and close collaboration with its players.
While a release date has not been announced, you can wishlist Wreckreation 2 over on Steam to receive future development updates and learn about upcoming beta tests and playtest opportunities.
