The Story
We pick up where we left off, with the confrontation between Ren, Akane, Eita, Yamada, and others. Eita stepped in and broke things up, allowing Akane to escape. What happened after that is between Eita and Ren; however, Akane felt bad about everything and wanted to talk with Yui and Hasegawa to make up with them. From there, we begin to explore a bit of Akane and Yamada’s relationship… that is, until the rain starts pouring down and we meet a new character in Tani… one of Yamada’s teammates from his other game.
He crashes there to sober up until the rain stops, which interferes with Yamada and Akane having some personal alone time together. Later on, they are all having a gaming session when Yamada calls it a night early. That’s because he wanted to be there for Akane as she was leaving on a trip back home to visit her family. When she returns, Akane has been overly tired as of late. This becomes the theme of the final two chapters until the final page, when an incident is about to occur! Can Yamada stop it!?
Characters
Wow… as soon as our new characters were introduced in the previous volume, they’re practically gone (almost). The situation with Ren got handled pretty quickly, and after that, Akane does a nice job talking to Yui and Hasegawa, getting them to apologize and make amends. It’s a bit too soon to tell whether or not they are going to continue hanging out with one another… either in real life or in FoS, but at least the hatchet was buried… the same can’t be said for Ren, though. We’ll have to see how things progress, but I can definitely tell that the seeds were planted for Yui to stand up to Ren, so we’ll see if there is any sort of payoff for that in the coming volumes.
Yamada and Akane’s relationship continued to deepen. You can tell that they are trying to ease into it little by little. Even Yamada noted that she’s only giving about 50% right now, to which Yamada hilariously compares her to a shounen battle manga character. Still, it’s nice to see them feeling one another out, figuring out when the right time to kiss is, and how they value one another; however, Yamada is getting a bit of mild backlash… mainly in the form of disbelief from those who know him. Nobody can believe that he suddenly has a girlfriend since it’s been three years since his previous one. Still, he’s not fazed by it one bit. Right now, he’s enjoying his time with Akane, and that’s all that counts.
Final Thoughts
There was some good here, but there was one thing that bothered me a bit. We had that chapter with Akane going home to see her family, and yes, while it did produce a cool moment for her little brother Kotaro, it just suddenly ended…. It was a hard stop because the very next chapter was like “In February…” and it picked up with her already being back home. I was really hoping that we could see Akane spend more time with her family, get to know her sister and brother some more, but nope. She said she was thinking of staying a while, but the story didn’t seem to want to do the same. Oh well, at least we know that Runa got accepted, meaning all of that tutoring paid off, right?
I’m not sure how I feel about our new character, Tani. He seems like one of those otakus who hasn’t touched grass in a long time because he instantly falls in love with any woman that he sees… including Akane, who he mistakes for someone else. He apparently gets drunk, loves Mahjong, and crashes at Yamada’s place quite often. I find him more annoying than anything, although he seems to be a brilliant strategist in their game… even if he demands credit for his intelligence from his teammates. I guess when you’re good, the team will put up with certain unpleasantries.
The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger, which can really go one of two ways. In some romance manga, one would believe that the outcome wouldn’t be severe, but this manga is a bit different. I’m thinking that we’re going to get a bit of an arc… one that kind of forces Yamada and Akane to grow a bit closer. We’ll see, though!
