The Story
We open up with Sou doing the complete opposite of what she had been doing to Nozomu this whole time… ignoring him! Everyone wonders what’s up with her, but then she opens up to Shirori and asks her for some relationship advice for her “friend.” She wants to know how to get a boy’s attention; however, Shiori has zero relationship experience herself, so she just tells her to go back to clinging to him… so she does.
Soon after, Nozomu’s grandfather returns from his fishing trip, which he felt was more important than coming to the family reunion, but at least he showed up, right? He’s spry for an old guy, and he instantly picks up on what’s happening between Sou and Nozomu! While he’s there, they visit his late wife’s grave, but it seemed as if she passed on before the majority of the family got a chance to know her.
Before everyone can get settled in, news of an impending typhoon is going to hit the area. Sou’s grandfather is confused by her sudden cowardice of the storm, but puts two and two together when she instantly runs to Nozomu for protection. Once the storm passes, however, it’s time to bring some of the family back home, so Sou tags along so Nozomu wouldn’t have to come back alone. While there, we get a glimpse into Nozomu’s backstory and why he is being transferred to a school near Sou.
Our volume ends with Nozomu attending his first day at his new school. Everything seems to be going just fine, but suddenly, someone calls out to him that might throw a huge monkey wrench in his plans to start fresh!
Characters
Believe it or not, the highlight of this volume was Nozomu’s grandfather. He just seems like a laid-back old timer who doesn’t let much of anything bother him. He’s also not the type to shy away from speaking what’s on his mind, either, even if what he says causes a bit of embarrassment for those around him. While he does come across as stubborn for putting a fishing trip ahead of his family, he, at the very least, still showed up for the reunion.
As for Sou and Nozomu, Sou is making things way too obvious for everyone… except for Nozomu, who remains as dense as ever. He’s more concerned with getting her to stop (quite literally) hanging off of him than he is reading into why she’s doing it. Sou, on the other hand, has made it perfectly clear that she has romantic feelings for her cousin. Shiori sees right through her relationship advice ploy, and her grandfather even knows what’s going on. The biggest question I have is… why isn’t anyone stepping in to tell them that incest is bad!?
It’s starting to feel like the opening chapter of Akira Failing in Love… “Sometimes two cousins will end up living together, and through biological happenstance, an attraction can form between them. Incest among family children is common in the countryside where…”
As for Nozomu, though… it wasn’t clear as to why he was suddenly transferred to the countryside, but now it’s apparent that he knows more than he was letting on. He talked about the reason why he transferred, but we don’t actually get into the specifics just yet. Seems like a slow-burn teaser that should keep us guessing for a little bit.
Then, things get quite heavy with the introduction of a new character in the form of a 9-year-old girl named Rei. They meet her at the aquarium, but she’s wheelchair-bound. When she tries to stand, she ends up falling. Thankfully, Sou is quick on her feet and catches her. After some talking, Sou and Nozomu want to know if they can hang out with her. She agrees, although her grandmother seems apprehensive about it. Sou’s mother picks up on it immediately and has her reservations, too, but she eventually caves and lets them hang out. Then, it gets even more awkward when they want to visit Rei in the hospital. Rei talked about being transferred to another hospital soon, but if you can read between the lines, this might be the last we see of this character.
Final Thoughts
There was some nice character development here on Sou’s part. She has her mind settled on wanting t be with Nozomu, and she’s beginning to make it painfully obvious to everyone around her. I like how absolutely shattered and shocked Takeru was when he found out that Nozomu was sticking around. While his development was too brief to truly go in-depth on, it was still hilarious.
I was honestly surprised that a happy, quirky, and comedic series like this took a dark turn with the introduction of Rei’s character, though. That kind of caught me off guard, but what made it even more painful to read was the fact that everyone around Sou and Nozomu knew what was going on, and what Rei’s fate was, but they were completely oblivious to it. They just thought that they had made another friend… one that they could hang out with for years to come. It was really sad to see Rei move to another hospital, because without Sou and Nozomu knowing it, they could have said goodbye for the final time.
Then again, it could all be a swerve and Rei could end up getting better and showing up at Sou’s school to act as her rival or something. I don’t know if we need rivals with Takeru anymore in the picture… or maybe we do? It would be an interesting and hilarious twist, though.
Overall, this was a great volume! It’s continuing to be an entertaining read. The biggest hook here is wondering when… not if… Nozomu finally learns what Sou has been up to this whole time, and what his response to all of it would be.
