The Prerelease of Magic: The Gathering x Avatar: The Last Airbender, the latest crossover expansion set for Magic: The Gathering (which is quickly becoming the Fortnite of card games), is right around the corner. Thanks to Wizards of the Coast, we’re proud to bring you an exclusive preview of one of the cards from the Magic: The Gathering x Avatar: The Last Airbender set.
That card is Fire Navy Trebuchet, an uncommon card of the Artifact Creature subclass.

Fire Navy Trebuchet is a quick study
Mana Cost: 2 Generic, 1 Black (3 total)
Type: Artifact Creature – Wall
Stats: 0/4
Abilities:
- Defender, Reach
- Whenever you attack, create a 2/1 colorless Construct artifact creature token with flying tapped and attacking. Sacrifice that token at the beginning of the next end step.
How It Works
At first, the Trebuchet looks purely defensive – it’s a Wall, after all. With Defender, it can’t attack directly, and its 0 power means it won’t be swinging at anyone. But its real strength lies in the ability it triggers whenever you attack.
Each time you declare an attack with any of your creatures, the Trebuchet automatically creates a 2/1 flying Construct token that joins the battle, already tapped and attacking. That token sacrifices itself at the end of the turn – exactly what a siege engine firing a projectile does.
So, while the Trebuchet never leaves its post, it still contributes to your offensive line, launching disposable airborne attackers turn after turn.
Defense Meets Offense
The card’s Reach keyword lets it block flying creatures – kind of like how catapults can strike enemies in the air. Defensively, it holds back flyers; offensively, it produces its own flying Construct to pressure your opponent’s life total.
It doesn’t “target” creatures, as some might assume – instead, it creates new ones. That distinction matters: nothing about this ability involves targeting or removal. It’s all about generating consistent value whenever you attack.
Where It Shines
Fire Navy Trebuchet shines in decks that care about attack triggers, tokens, or artifact synergies. For example:
- Token Decks: It’s a reliable source of temporary attackers.
- Artifact Builds: The flying token counts as an artifact, feeding into metalcraft or sacrifice strategies.
- Commander Play: In multiplayer, a free 2/1 flying attacker each turn adds up – especially when combined with attack-based abilities or anthem effects.
While it’s not a heavy hitter, its consistency makes it an underrated utility piece. It’s a siege weapon that never rests – providing value even when your frontline is small.
