Ubisoft has revealed a brand-new way to experience the Rainbow Six universe with Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Tactics, a single-player, turn-based tactical game announced during Opening Night of Gamescom. Developed by Ubisoft Paris, the game takes the familiar operators and tactical gameplay of Rainbow Six and puts them into a completely different style of experience.
For the first time in the franchise, players will take on the role of Six, the commander of Rainbow, as they lead teams of up to four operators into dangerous missions around the world. Before heading into the field, players will need to prepare their squad at Rainbow HQ, look over available intel, assign the right operators, and upgrade their base. Once the mission begins, every decision can make the difference as players work through turn-based encounters.
Rainbow Six Tactics is set alongside the ongoing Rainbow Six Siege timeline, with a new global threat forcing Team Rainbow to operate on a much larger scale. The game places as much importance on what happens before a mission as on what happens during it, giving players the chance to train their team, improve their equipment, and make strategic choices before deploying.
The game features 15 operators from Rainbow Six Siege, and players can build squads of four based on how they want to approach each mission. Each operator has their own abilities, gadgets, and skill trees, meaning there should be plenty of room to experiment with different combinations. Missions will also take players across a variety of locations and objectives, including hostage rescues, bomb disposal and target elimination.
One of the biggest parts of Rainbow Six Tactics is the destructible environments. Players can break through walls, remove cover, and create new routes as the situation changes. The Breach feature takes it a step further, letting all your operators act together in a coordinated assault and break away from the normal turn-based flow as they storm into a new area.
While Rainbow Six Tactics is certainly a different direction for the franchise, it still looks to keep the planning, teamwork, and tactical decision-making that Rainbow Six is known for. Moving between managing Rainbow HQ and carefully executing missions could make for an interesting combination, especially for players who enjoy tactical games.
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Tactics is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Ubisoft Connect, Steam and the Epic Games Store. The game will also be available through Ubisoft+, GeForce Now and Blacknut at launch. Players can now wishlist the game on their preferred platform.
