Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & The Envisioned Land was one of my favorite games period last year. It added a lot to the Atelier series, though it also streamlined it and removed other parts. At Nintendo’s Direct yesterday, we got an announcement that the series was continuing with Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & The Guide of Memories.
My favorite arc in the Atelier games is Sophie’s arc. She is the main character, but later on in her story, she becomes a mentor to other alchemists in the series. It looks like Yumia is becoming a mentor in the same regard to Karia. Karia in the trailer seems to be looking for her memories, as the only thing she remembers, as emphasized in this trailer, is her name. She mentions Yumia as someone who is doing her best with alchemy. So it is definitely connected to that same world. Plus, it name-drops the region of Aladiss, which the Yumia game was all about.
Alchemy does not seem to work the same as Yumia either. Yumia used alchemy through dancing. Karia seems to use alchemy through… eating? One thing fans of the older games will be excited about is that there is a cauldron in the atelier this time around. There was some backlash towards Yumia for not having a cauldron in her own atelier. I wonder if that will bring with it the limitation of only letting you do alchemy at the atelier. One thing that was unique to Yumia was being able to do alchemy outside the atelier. Yumia could do fast alchemical reactions to create bullets while she was out and about, so you wouldn’t need to worry about being out of ammunition.
Karia seems to have action combat similar to Yumia’s game. Karia uses a sword this time around instead of a staff gun like Yumia did. She can stop time to use items or activate skills. Hopefully, combat becomes a little more strategic as the fast-paced combat in Yumia became pretty repetitive; it felt like a button masher.
The trailer ends with just a release time frame of early 2027. Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories will be released on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Hey, more Atelier games on XBOX is always nice to see.
