Astor: Blade of Monolith is a Hack-and-Slash Adventure I Can’t Wait to Play

Hack and slash with a legend of zelda feel with combos!

During the IGN X ID@Xbox digital showcase, a new hack-and-slash title called Astor: Blade of the Monolith, previously known as Monolith Requiem of the Ancients, was revealed, with a release date of May 30th, 2024. This was the first time I’ve heard about this title, and with a release date that’s just a month away, it’s surprising that no one has said anything about it until now.

Of course, being the hack-and-slash fan at The Outerhaven, I’m dying to know more about the game. Thankfully, thanks to IGN’s short gameplay session, we got to see that the game plays similarly to The Legend of Zelda, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, or, more recently, Death’s Door. The latter was a title that I couldn’t put down until I had beaten it.

While the official website does not have information about Astor: Blade of Monolith (weird), the Steam page does give us some details about the title, as well as two dev logs (dev log 1 | dev log 2).

Supposedly, the game will have up to 20 hours of gameplay, with both the main and side quests. It will have four unique weapons and combos and the ability to summon power constructs, which I’m not sure what that means.

Explore the vibrant planet of Gliese, once inhabited by an ancient race, and now home to their sentient creations – the Diokek. After the ancients’ disappearance, the Diokek lived in peace until malevolent creatures, the Hiltsik, started wreaking havoc among their settlements. With threats of a more sinister force at play, Astor – a young Diokek warrior, must journey across Gliese to solve the mysterious disappearance of his creators thousands of years ago, believing that they may have left behind the key to their salvation.

Explore the mystical planet of Gliese and search for a lost history hidden throughout the planet’s majestic landscapes, ancient ruins, and old temples left by past civilizations. Using your newfound runic power, shift into the spirit realm to solve puzzles, reveal secret passages, and uncover the answers to save the future.

Arm yourself with 4 types of powerful weapons and special abilities as you engage in intense, fast-paced battles. Pummel your enemies with a combination of melee strikes, ranged attacks, and air combos. Switch between equipped weapons at any time–even mid-combo to deliver unyielding critical hits. The choice is yours!

Harness the power of the Runic Swarm, an ancient energy used to materialize runic power as weapons or tools in combat. Unleash charged attacks to create devastating finishers, such as the Wall Crush and Runic Cannon, or summon powerful companions, shields, and decoys to gain the upper hand in combat.

Your journey will lead you down a path of discovery toward your destiny. Uncover answers to solve the mysterious disappearance of the ancients thousands of years ago, for they created the Diokek, but what deeper purpose lies behind the existence of your kind? Are you, Astor, truly the chosen one destined to bring salvation or destruction? The ancient Monolith holds the key to your answers, awaiting your arrival with the secrets of the past.
One thing is for sure: This looks like the sort of game that I enjoy sinking my teeth into. Time will only tell if the game does what I’m hoping it does.
Astor: Blade of the Monolith, developed by C2 Game Studio and with publishing duties being handled by Tinybuild, releases on May 30th, 2024, for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG).
