Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Has Biggest Video Game Movie Opening Ever

Video game movies for the LONGEST time were mired in mediocrity and being…well…just bad. Before a few years ago, you could count on one hand the ones that were actually good. But then, in the course of a few years, we got a breakthrough. First was Detective Pikachu, and then there was Sonic The Hedgehog.

Granted, they had to do some HEAVY work on Sonic himself, but they did better, and the movie was the highest-grossing video game movie ever. Which, obviously, put a LOT of pressure on Sonic The Hedgehog 2 to do just as well in theaters. Hint: it did well. S0 well, that fans are saying that “Sonic 2 movie the best video game adaptation ever.”

In fact, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 beat the original movie’s box office total (based on current projections) by a lot! The original Sonic movie made $58 million in its opening weekend, and its sequel has been projected to make $71 million domestically in its first weekend! Cementing it as the highest-grossing opening weekend for a video game movie. Pretty cool, huh?

And recall that a third Sonic movie has already been greenlit, along with a Knuckles solo series on Paramount+. So yeah, Sonic is going to be just fine…in movies at least…
