Amazon renews Invincible for 2 more seasons

By Karl SmartApril 30, 2021

Amazon Original animation series Invincible has been renewed for a second and third season after the overwhelming success of the first season.

Invincible follows the story of teenager Mark Grayson (played by Steven Yeun) who after years of waiting finally develops superpowers inherited from his father Nolan, the world’s most famous superhero Omni-Man (played by J.K. Simmons). Amazon’s Invincible is based on the Image Comics series of the same name, created by Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead, and artist Cory Walker. The comic is known for blending heightened and silly superhero elements with adult drama and ultraviolence, and the Invincible show is aiming to capture that balance too.

Much of the main cast of Invincible season 1 is likely to return for a second season. This includes Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh (Nora Grayson), Zazie Beetz (Amber Bennett), Gillian Jacobs (Atom Eve), and Zachary Quinto (Robot) as all of their characters play key roles in the comic’s story going forward. Also likely to return are guest actors like Ezra Miller (DA Sinclair), Seth Rogen (Allen the Alien), and Mahershala Ali (Titan). All of them become bigger parts of the story as the series goes on.

For more information, see the press release below.

“CULVER CITY, Calif. – April 29, 2021 – In advance of its highly anticipated April 30 Season 1 finale, Amazon Studios today announced it has renewed Robert Kirkman’s (‘The Walking Dead’) hour-long, adult animated series ‘Invincible’ for a second and third season. Season 2 and Season 3 will exclusively stream on Amazon Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

“I’m extremely thankful to Amazon for the support and dedication they’ve put behind ‘Invincible’,” said Kirkman. “The comic book is truly a love letter to a genre that Cory (Walker) and I grew up reading and loving, and it’s been a gratifying journey to watch our characters come to life again through the animated series. We’re beyond excited to continue this story for at least two more seasons.”

“’Invincible’ is a crowning example of how a fresh and edgy approach to the superhero genre can resonate with audiences around the globe and we’re so glad that Invincible, one of our earliest investments in the adult animation genre, has accomplished just that,” said Vernon Sanders, Co-Head of Television at Amazon Studios. “Robert’s no-holds-barred storytelling coupled with a first-class voice cast delivered on fans’ wildest expectations and we’re thrilled to be giving them more ‘Invincible’.

From ‘The Walking Dead’ creator Robert Kirkman, and based on the Skybound/Image comic of the same name by Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley, ‘Invincible’ is an hour-long, adult animated superhero show that revolves around 17-year-old Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who’s just like every other guy his age — except that his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). But as Mark develops powers of his own, he discovers that his father’s legacy may not be as heroic as it seems.

‘Invincible’ stars Sandra Oh (‘Killing Eve’), Seth Rogen (‘This is the End’), Gillian Jacobs (‘Community’), Andrew Rannells (‘Black Monday’, ‘Girls’), Zazie Beetz (‘Deadpool 2’), Mark Hamill (‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’), Walton Goggins (‘Justified’), Jason Mantzoukas (‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’), Zachary Quinto (‘Star Trek’), Mahershala Ali (‘Moonlight’), Melise (‘The Flash’), Kevin Michael Richardson (‘The Simpsons’), Grey Griffin (‘Avengers Assemble’), Khary Payton (‘The Walking Dead’) and more.

‘Invincible’ is produced by Skybound and executive produced by Kirkman, Simon Racioppa, David Alpert (‘The Walking Dead’, ‘Fear the Walking Dead’), Catherine Winder (‘The Angry Birds Movie’, ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’) with Supervising Director Jeff Allen (‘Avengers Assemble’, ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’), and Linda Lamontagne serving as casting director. ‘Invincible’, Kirkman’s second-longest comic book series, concluded in February 2018 after a 15-year run.“

We’re so excited that more episodes of Invincible will be flying onto our screens in the future. While Invincible flew under our radar due to the focus on The Falcon and Winter Soldier, there will be a review and more on Invincible coming soon, so stay tuned for more updates. As of April 30, Invincible‘s season 1 is available.
