The Next Smash Bros. DLC fighter to be revealed today

Update: Nintendo announced that Square Enix’s Sephiroth from Final Fantasy, is the next DLC fighter to be added to Super Smash Bros Ultimate. You can follow the announcement, here.

Later on today, The Game Awards 2020 show is taking place at 4 PM PT / 7 PM ET, and with it will come all sorts of announcements for games. However, Nintendo has just dropped a possible megaton (I love this word) with the tease that a new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter will be revealed, tonight. Yes, during the TGA show.

Now, before we go any further, please temper your expectations. Just because this character is going to be revealed, doesn’t mean it will be released at the same time. This wouldn’t be the first time we’ve had a character announced during a TGA event, only to be released months later.  And if you can’t, I fully understand. This is SSBU and it’s “possibly the biggest roster in fighting game history” is always a popular topic among Nintendo Fans. Heck, we got a few on our team who won’t stop talking about the game or who they’d like to see added.

So let’s talk about that for a second. There’s a list, of characters, posted below, that the Smash community would love to see added to the game. Looking over this list, I can see that some of these characters don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of making it. But it’s entertaining to say the list.

Let’s look at this list.

  • Crash (Crash Bandicoot)
  • Geno (Super Mario RPG)
  • Doom Guy (Doom)
  • Sora (Kingdom Hearts)
  • Dante (Devil May Cry)
  • Rayman (Rayman)
  • Steve / Alex (Minecraft)
  • Master Chief (Halo)
  • Bandana Waddle Dee (Kirby)
  • Phoenix Wright (Ace Attorney)
  • Reimu (Touhou)
  • Waluigi (Super Mario)
  • Shantae (Shantae)
  • Travis Touchdown (No More Heroes)
  • Isaac (Golden Sun)
  • Dixie Kong (Donkey Kong Country)
  • 2B (Nier)
  • Rex & Pyra (Xenoblade)
  • Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden)
  • Arle Nadja (Puyo Puyo)
  • Spyro (Spyro)
  • The Knight (Hollow Knight)
  • Lloyd Irving (Tales)
  • Heavy (Team Fortress 2)
  • Dr. Eggman (Sonic the Hedgehog)

Now, I don’t want to be the party pooper here, but there are some characters I don’t see making the cut. DOOM Guy and Master Chief, two characters that I’d love to see in SSMU, are Microsoft/Xbox properties. And as much as Phil Spencer is all about sharing the love, I don’t see either of these two making the jump.

While Shantae and 2B have too much sex appeal and would disqualify them. Or is should, just like when Masahiro Sakurai stated that the reason why Fatal Fury’s / King of Fighters Mia Shiranui didn’t make the cut was due to “SSBU being a game for good boys and girls.” Yet, somehow Bayonetta, a character whose entire outfit is made out of hair and she tends to strip that off while doing battle, made the cut. Hey, I don’t make these things up, I just write about them.

There are just so many characters on this list and those who aren’t that could be added and I’d be here all day if I wanted to speculate. So I’ll just leave it with both Ryu Hayabusa and Dante better make it to SSMU!

Stay tuned tonight during the Game Awards Show to see who Masahiro Sakurai announces, and to see if this announcement shuts down the internet.
