The DCEU Casts Two More Characters for its ‘Birds of Prey’ Film

By Sara Roncero-MenendezSeptember 30, 2018

As the Joker movie continues to move forward with new pictures of Joaquin Phoenix, fans have been wondering if there has been any more news on the Birds of Prey film. Well, we may have some new casting news. According to Variety, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell have been cast as Huntress and Black Canary.

The two will be joining Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn, and Cathy Yan will direct the film. There’s no additional details as to what exactly the characters will be like, but their aliases will still be Helena Bertinelli and Dinah Lance. According to preliminary plot news, the movie will feature the team will fight a Gotham crime lord who has yet to be announced.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is probably best known as Ramona Flowers in the film adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and Michelle in 10 Cloverfield Lane. Jurnee Smollett-Bell is best known for her work on True Blood, and will be starring in Jordan Peele’s upcoming HBO horror series Lovecraft Country.

“I can’t say that I was a huge comic book reader,” Winstead told TheWrap. “But when I met with Cathy Yan, who’s directing the film, and learned kind of the back story of the character, I was really interested,” added the actress. “It’s a really strong, kind of emotional place to start from for a superhero character. I won’t go into too much detail now, but I think it’s interesting and an opportunity to do something cool with this kind of character.”

The currently untitled Birds of Prey film is set to premiere on February 7, 2020.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
