The first trailer has arrived for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie. Technically, it’s labeled as a “teaser,” but it’s fairly substantial. The trailer introduces us to Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, who enters a residence that is sure to be evil. Our Editor-in-Chief Keith pointed out that it’s partially on Bryan, as does waltz right into a stranger’s eerie home.
Check out the trailer below to see how Bryan’s night seems to only get worse from there.
Sony Pictures notes that Resident Evil promises an “all-new story” within the Resident Evil franchise. The movie, which seems to just be called Resident Evil—no subtitle—focuses on a medical courier fighting for survival.
This is Cregger’s first foray into the Resident Evil universe. But Cregger is far from a stranger to horror. He previously wrote and directed Barbarian and Weapons. Both received widespread acclaim. Weapons even picked up an Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actress department for Amy Madigan’s performance.
Fans may notice that this Resident Evil eschews the characters and settings of the popular Capcom games. There’s no Leon roundhouse kicking zombies in the face or any wide shots of the Spencer Mansion. Of course, we’ve only seen the one trailer. But Cregger previously shared that “he’s not trying to be completely obedient to the games.”
While the trailer doesn’t show any recognizable franchise locales or faces, it does have a few Resident Evil elements just the same. Notably, Bryan having to look for a key which gets dragged away right before he can grab it. I felt that, Bryan.
The Constantin Film and Columbia Pictures movie stars Abrams as well as Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser. Cregger directed the film and also co-wrote it with Shay Hatten.
Resident Evil will creep into theaters on September 18th, 2026.
