Avatar The Last Airbender

Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most beloved animated shows of all time, due to its creative premise, gorgeous world building, and excellent storytelling. Many were truly heartbroken at the M. Night Shyamalan film adaptation of the show, which striped the story of everything that was good. Now Netflix announced that they are working on a live-action remake of this beloved show, and fans are getting excited with some very exciting concept art by artist John Staub.

Why are fans putting their trust in this new show? Well, for one,  original series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino will be at the helm, making the big decisions and acting as the show runners. They released a statement that both throws some well-deserved shade at the film version and highlights some of what their plans are:

“We’re thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. We can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build upon everyone’s great work on the original animated series and go even deeper into the characters, story, action, and world-building. Netflix is wholly dedicated to manifesting our vision for this retelling, and we’re incredibly grateful to be partnering with them.”

Netflix will partner with Nickelodeon on this project, as they still own the rights to the show and its sequel. No word yet as to whether a Legend of Korra adaptation could also be on the table, but we don’t want to count our turtle-ducks before they hatch.

Production on Avatar: The Last Airbender series will begin in 2019. We will update keep you updated as we learn more about the cast, crew, and premiere date in the coming months.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
