With E3 around the corner, the battle between Sony and Microsoft has begun and Microsoft took the first shot this year by announcing that they have obtained the license and plan on remaking the Nintendo 64 classic Goldeneye 007 exclusively for Xbox One.

“We were able to bring Killer Instinct to the masses as an Xbox One launch title as well as the Rare Replay collection to Xbox One, but there was just something missing. We are excited to announce that we have acquired the licensing for the Goldeneye 007 franchise and now fans can soon enjoy this title exclusively on Xbox One.” said Phil Spencer, head of the Microsoft Games Division.

Phil Spencer went on to reveal some of the details regarding this title.

“We are also excited to announce that this will be a full HD remake of the game. Fans of the 1995 original will find everything they know and love about the game in stunning high definition that’s only possible with Xbox One. Of course, we’ll be adding some new features to the game, especially multiplayer, but we invite you to tune into our conference at this year’s E3 to find out all the amazing plans we have in store for Goldeneye 007.”

Fans of the series have been dreaming about the possibility for over a decade and now it looks like it’s finally happening. Early speculation shows that the multiplayer mode will remain intact, but we can only speculate that with today’s technology, you will be subject to an enhanced matchmaking system, new maps, skins, weapons, and possibly new modes.

There is no word on whether or not Microsoft will offer Goldeneye 007 for Windows PC or if there will be any cross platform play as of yet. We expect that information will be covered at this year’s E3.

*Yes folks, this is an April Fools Prank. Though, one can only dream.*
