Earlier this month, Sony announced that it will end all physical disc production for new games by 2028. This has become a growing trend. For example, Grand Theft Auto 6 will release later this year as a digital-only title. As such, people have eyes on upcoming games, eager to see how they release. In an interview with GamesRadar+, Final Fantasy VII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi discussed what this means for the upcoming RPG.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, will arrive in Spring 2027. Other than a trailer, Square Enix hasn’t shared too much about the much anticipated finale. And in fact, Square Enix has yet to make a decision on whether Final Fantasy VII Revelation will see a physical release.
However, in the interview, director Naoki Hamaguchi explained that he would like to see Revelation arrive on a disc. “I am working to make the arrangements to allow us to have some kind of physical edition.”
That said, Hamaguchi understands both sides of the debate. “I do feel, as a developer and as a fan, that the general trend is for things to shift away from physical towards downloadable games,” Hamaguchi explained. Speaking from Fan Fest in Berlin, he also noted the desire to preserve physical media for autographs and collecting. “I think it’s a wonderful culture and it would be a shame to lose that. I want that to remain.”
The second part of the trilogy, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, recently saw a port released for the Nintendo Switch 2. This port is available in both digital and physical forms. The physical release contains a game card.
Aside from standard physical releases, the Final Fantasy VII Remake series has enjoyed lavish collector’s editions in the past. 2020’s Final Fantasy VII Remake saw a 1st Class Edition containing a steelbook, an art book, a mini-soundtrack, DLC, and a figure of Cloud Strife on a motorcycle. And, of course, a physical copy of the game.
2024’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth saw a collector’s edition as well. In addition to the disc, it included a steelbook, an art book, a mini-soundtrack, DLC, and, notably, a 19-inch statue of Sephiroth. It remains to be seen if Revelation continues this trend. Of course, Square Enix could also opt to release a collector’s edition without a disc.
We’ll likely learn more about Final Fantasy VII Revelation in the next couple of months. And of course, we’ll know for sure whether it arrives via physical media or digital only ahead of its release in Spring 2027. It will debut for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
