The second trailer for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie has lurched onto the scene. When the first trailer arrived in April, it didn’t feature much in the way of nods to the Resident Evil game series. Cregger previously mentioned in an interview that he’s “not trying to be completely obedient to the games.”
Thankfully, this trailer is more overt about when, or rather where, this Resident Evil film takes place in relation to the games. Right off the bat, I’ll tell you that there’s no Leon S. Kennedy or Claire Redfield appearance. Sorry. But there are a few Easter Eggs in store. Check out the trailer below to see the references for yourself. If you don’t catch them, I’ll mention some later on.
Resident Evil stars Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier who’s transporting organs to hospitals. Unfortunately, his delivery gets interrupted by a frightening occurrence. We need some horror after all. And director Zach Cregger is no stranger to the genre. He previously directed breakout horror Barbarian as well as last year’s Weapons.
So, did you find the Resident Evil references? Bryan’s delivery gets interrupted by a zombie shambling out in front of his vehicle, calling back to the opening of Resident Evil 2. And when Bryan enters the nearby house to look for help, he finds a shotgun… with no bullets. So naturally, he has to look for the bullets, stumbling upon the series’ iconic green shotgun ammo box in a drawer.
But the biggest callback to the series comes at the end of the trailer. It jumps back in time to Bryan asking a question about his delivery. Where is he headed? Why, Raccoon City General, of course!
Regardless of whether Carlos shows up with Jill in tow, this name-drop certainly places Resident Evil near its iconic city. Raccoon City General is most likely the same location as the hospital from Resident Evil 3, known simply as Raccoon General.
We’ll find out for sure if it’s the same location this fall. We’ll also see if there are any other connections to the video game series. Resident Evil will shamble into theaters on September 18th, 2026.
