Last week saw PlayStation Network go offline for hours due to an issue involving Amazon’s cloud service, AWS. Now, it is Xbox’s turn, as several key Xbox services have been experiencing an outage since early this morning on July 27.
The outage is affecting account and profile access, the Xbox Store, and even the ability to access or play certain games. As you can imagine, having both PlayStation and Xbox suffer major outages within days of each other is not doing wonders for the gaming industry’s envisioned digital-only future.
Xbox is aware of the situation and stated earlier this morning that its teams were working to resolve the issue.
We are aware that some users are encountering errors when attempting to sign in, see your game library, or launch games. Our engineers are actively working to mitigate the issue. For updates, please follow along here or on https://t.co/Ehlmwc7gX0.

While the recent PlayStation outage was connected to an issue involving Amazon Web Services, Xbox relies on Microsoft’s own online infrastructure (Azure). You would imagine that having everything under the same Microsoft umbrella would make it easier to identify and resolve the problem, but Xbox has not explained what is causing the outage.
While some people have stated that they are not having any issues, I can confirm that I am still unable to access several Xbox online services, including the Xbox Store. Others have reported being unable to access their game libraries or launch games.
That is also why the push toward an all-digital future continues to worry me, at least on the console side of things. We can’t do anything about an all-digital PC future since we’re already living it. When the servers go down, players can lose access to the games, services, and content they paid for. It does not matter whether the issue lasts for a few hours or an entire day. If you cannot access what you purchased, that is a problem.
Until Xbox confirms what is going on and the services are fully restored, you can check the current status of this masterpiece in failure by visiting the Xbox Status page.
