So, this is a bummer. Tomb Raider: Catalyst, the ambitious new entry in the series that Crystal Dynamics has been building alongside its Legacy of Atlantis remake, just quietly got pushed back a year. And it did not happen through a press release or a slick trailer. It happened almost as a throwaway line during a podcast interview.
I recently started listening to The Game Business Podcast, and it has quickly become something of a guilty pleasure. It is a grounded show packed with useful industry information, and I usually come away having learned something new. However, this week’s episode included guest Jeffery Gattis, General Manager of Gaming at Amazon, who likely accidently released the unfortunate news regarding the upcoming Tomb Raider: Catalyst.
During the segment at the 17:00 mark, Gattis discusses several titles Amazon will be publishing. During the conversation, he mentions that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will be released on February 12, 2027, while Tomb Raider: Catalyst is now targeting a 2028 release. Gattis does not go into much detail about the new release window, it was just a quick roll of the tongue moment.
Speaking of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, we had the opportunity to go hands-on with the game during Summer Game Fest 2026, and we had plenty to say about Crystal Dynamics’ return to Lara Croft’s original adventure.
Now, I get why this is happening. Having Amazon and Crystal Dynamics release two Tomb Raider games in the same calendar year, even if one of them is a remake of the very first game in the series, was always going to be an awkward proposition. Even with Legacy of Atlantis aiming for a leaner, more classic-style experience, you are still asking the same audience to buy into two Lara Croft adventures within months of each other. Spacing them out gives each game room to build its own moment instead of competing with itself for attention.
Outside of this, Amazon has not put out a statement addressing the 2028 window directly. But when the general manager of your gaming division says it on the record, it is about as close to confirmation as you are going to get before the real announcement lands.
