During yesterday’s PlayStation State of Play, Sony showed off two games back-to-back featuring people avoiding dinosaurs. So you’d be forgiven for thinking that The Lost Wild is part of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. The trailer for one, showing a woman navigating a jungle full of dinosaurs, led right into the other, showing… a woman navigating a jungle full of dinosaurs.
So I am happy to tell you dino fans out there that the PlayStation 5 has made room for two games with dinosaurs run amok. While Tomb Raider features dinosaurs among other dangers, The Lost Wild is all about the dinos, baby.
Developed by Great Ape Games and published by Annapurna Interactive, The Lost Wild focuses on survival horror. Remember when dinosaurs were scary? 1993’s Jurassic Park and 1999’s Dino Crisis remember.
That said, The Lost Wild seems to take more of a dino-chewed page out of 2001’s Jurassic Park III. This is to say that it’s not about dinosaurs breaking out and rampaging while you fight them. Instead, it’s about returning to an island already overrun with the prehistoric beasts and sneaking past them. Check out the announcement trailer below to get a sense of this predicament.
In The Lost Wild, players take on the role of Saskia, who wakes up on said island. As Saskia, they must explore the abandoned research facility there while avoiding becoming dino-chow.
Great Ape Games stresses that this is not a power fantasy. Players won’t pick up guns and starts blasting Compsognathus by the hundreds. Rather, they’ll have to use stealth and caution to stay alive amongst the dinosaur threat.
In a press release, Great Ape Games CEO Nick Gregory shared more about the impetus behind the game’s style and structure:
“The Lost Wild is a survival horror experience unlike any other, one that is built around slow burn tension while players are hunted by intelligent dinosaurs. These are not monsters, these are wild animals that think of you as prey.
This idea has persisted in various forms and iterations over the years. What started as a shared passion for dinosaurs, curiosity, and a love of games eventually grew into a fully fledged grassroots studio with over 25 talented people behind it. We now find ourselves in the incredibly fortunate position of building our dream dinosaur game, a true love letter to the genre, alongside one of the best publishers in the industry.”
In The Lost Wild, players may not have access to big guns. But that doesn’t mean they’re defenseless.
Saskia can acquire various items while scouring the abandoned facility. These include non-lethal weapons and items that can make noise and cause distractions. And if all else fails, hide. Just hope that the Velociraptors on this island can’t open any doors…
The Lost Wild will arrive on PlayStation 5 and PC in 2027. Players may wishlist it for PlayStation here.
