Fans of Mewgenics who have been waiting to play the critically acclaimed cat-breeding tactical roguelite on consoles will not have to wait much longer. During Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live, developers Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel announced that Mewgenics will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 on September 8, 2026.
The console announcement follows the game’s hugely successful PC launch earlier this year. Mewgenics was released through Steam on February 10, 2026, and quickly became one of the year’s biggest indie success stories, surpassing one million copies sold within its first week.
Developed by Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, Mewgenics combines turn-based tactical combat, roguelite progression, and an extensive cat-breeding system. McMillen is best known for creating The Binding of Isaac and co-creating Super Meat Boy, while Glaiel previously worked on games including Closure and The End Is Nigh.
The console versions have been in development for several months. McMillen previously confirmed that the team was working to bring the game to additional platforms, although he was unable to provide a release date or confirm which consoles would be supported at the time. He later described Nintendo Switch 2 as the “front runner,” while noting that the final selection would depend on which platforms were considered viable.
The developers eventually showed Mewgenics running on Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5, providing the clearest indication that console versions were moving forward. An Xbox Store listing then appeared ahead of the official announcement, revealing a September 8 release date before it was confirmed during Opening Night Live.
In Mewgenics, players build an army of cats through tactical breeding before sending their feline fighters into challenging turn-based adventures. Cats can be assigned different classes and abilities, while genetics, mutations, equipment, and traits passed between generations all play a role in creating increasingly strange and powerful teams.
The game also offers a massive amount of content. Mewgenics features more than 10 character classes with 75 unique abilities per class, over 1,000 abilities, more than 900 items, and over 200 enemies and bosses. Its main campaign can reportedly take more than 200 hours to complete, with roguelite progression and environmental interactions designed to make each run different.
For console owners who have watched Mewgenics become one of 2026’s biggest PC hits from the sidelines, the wait is nearly over. McMillen and Glaiel’s bizarre army of mutant cats will invade PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 on September 8, 2026.
