The Story
Volume 15 of Dead Mount Death Play takes us into the aftermath of the Hospital Arc. We start with Katashiro being invited to Clarissa’s for a meeting. He brings Lila along, passing her off as his bodyguard. When he meets with Clarissa, Rouge, and Tamate from the Shinoyama family are present. Katashiro has no idea what’s going on, but he manages to get by by being as vague as possible and gleaning all of the information he can. He disarms Rouge and Tamate’s suspicions by glazing Takeru as much as possible. They mainly want to know what his connection to Polka is, why he was at the hospital, and who hired him to be Polka’s protector.
Once that’s done, Fram and Polka study the dragon scale and figure out how someone from the other world was able to communicate through the radio. They determined that they could do it in reverse and sent a signal back. When it tuned it, they recognized the voice as someone Polka (Riz) knew quite well! They said that transmission was possible again in five revelations, or in about 2 ½ Earth days. Until then, Riz needs to acquire more magic so that they can easily make the connection, so a search for corpses or gems begins!
Meanwhile, Misaki and Yumeji are being forced to work together, but Yumeji doesn’t trust Misaki one bit. When he learns that she could have possibly killed Polka and “failed,’ he becomes enraged. While he takes his frustration out on the thugs they were fighting, he makes it clear what he thinks of her. Finally, Civil is out gathering information and infiltrates a casino; however, his detection prevention magic may work on human eyes, but not cameras. Soon, he is discovered, finding himself in quite a situation!
Characters
The biggest development here in this volume belongs to the real Polka. We learned that he could see elemental spirits as a kid. His mother learned of this and told him to always keep it a secret; however, when he admits this to Fram, he believes that Polka could learn how to use magic by becoming an elementalist. When faced with that possibility, he needs to decide on whether or not it’s okay to learn magic, knowing that if he does, his life could change forever… uh… again. To be honest, the poor kid is already dead and stuffed inside of a shark plushie… what does he really have to lose at this point?
We learned a little more about the ranking system in Riz’s original world. We learned at the top of the sorcerer charts was Arius Sabaramond, and Riz was ranked #4 of the world’s strongest. While it wasn’t a lot of in-depth backstory, it did give us a better idea of his position within the world.
Katashiro continues to be my favorite character. I love how he uses his gilded tongue to come off as this all-knowing threat to the social convention of things, when in reality, he’s completely clueless, nervous about being caught, and just says really vague things until he understands what is going on. I also love how he would much rather go home than stick around and listen to some sort of meeting about him. The fact that people revere him as this all-knowing genius who is a combat master is hilarious. I don’t know how he can continue to get away with putting on the façade, but for my own entertainment, I hope he is never outed! This must continue!
Final Thoughts
This volume didn’t truly further the plot much, but it felt important because it seemed as if we were setting up some things for the future. Obviously, we have that second communication with Pani coming up, so I’m sure the next volume will detail Riz going around and collecting whatever he can to replenish his mana reserves. Plus, we have to see why Civil has been snooping around and gathering information. Then, we have the Yumeji/Misaki situation where Yumeji is doing his best at holding it together, but you can tell that the dam is about to break. It makes you wonder if Misaki is going to spill all of the details to him or if she’s going to let him wander along in the vast world of nothingness.
Clarissa is still staying true to herself. As an information broker, she’s only interested in information, and she wants that through making connections. She makes that clear during the meeting, but even those in attendance can tell that she’s doing this for something more than a new connection to glean info from. What those intentions are, who knows? I’m sure we’ll find out in due time, but it has been fifteen volumes, and she’s kept her true intentions to herself this whole time. There has to be a moment when they will come out and be revealed, and to keep them a secret for this long, I’m sure it’s going to have a major impact at just the right moment. At this point, it wouldn’t shock me if she were either from or working for people from the other world. We’ll see, though.
Also, I like how Solitaire showed up at the very beginning, rambled off some nonsense, then wasn’t heard from again for the rest of the volume. As expected of a character like him. But seeing him reminds me that people like Lemmings and the Fire Breathing Bug are still out there somewhere, and we still haven’t fully solved either one of those cases.
If there is one thing Narita-sensei is great at, it’s weaving all of these intricate individual tales, then tying them all together at the perfect moments. I’m just waiting for that moment when everything converges and makes sense. We’ve gotten some answers along the way, but there are still a lot of questions. I know… in due time… but the nice thing is… this series doesn’t make you beg for the answers. It makes you enjoy the journey until you get to them!
