Report: GTA Online Will Be Sold Separately From GTA 6 at Launch

According to a recent rumor from well-known leaker Tez2, GTA 6 might be released in two different versions. One edition would include both the story mode and multiplayer, while the other would offer only GTA Online as a standalone version at a lower price.

Rockstar Games has used this approach before with other games, but it usually happened months or years after the game first came out. If GTA 6 is released with these two versions right away, it would be the first time Rockstar has done this.

Both Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 5 adopted a similar approach, allowing players to purchase either the full game or just the online mode separately. This was a good option for those who only wanted to play online and were looking for a cheaper choice.

If this rumor is true, GTA 6 would be the first Rockstar Games title to launch with a separate multiplayer version. In the past, GTA Online was released only after Grand Theft Auto V, so this would be a completely new approach.

Tez2 suggests that Rockstar Games and Take-Two plan to release GTA 6 in two editions: one featuring both story and multiplayer, and another that includes only GTA Online. Given the massive success of GTA Online, this could be a strategic move to attract players who are solely interested in the online experience. It is also possible that players who start with the multiplayer edition might later be offered an upgrade to the full version.

The GTA+ subscription service could also play a role in this strategy, potentially offering an upgrade path similar to Game Pass, where premium editions of first-party titles are included in the Ultimate subscription. This approach could further enhance Rockstar’s subscription service.

While this idea seems plausible, it remains a rumor for now. Until official confirmation is provided, fans should take this information with caution.
