Nintendo’s Returns to 2D Side-Scrolling with Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Nintendo has revealed Super Mario Bros. Wonder, a brand new 2D side-scrolling Mario platformer coming this October 2023, during its June 2023 Nintendo Direct.

This new 2D platformer is the first brand-new side-scrolling from Nintendo in over ten years and revolves around a new power, the Wonder Flower. During the reveal, we saw Mario transform into an Elephant, a first in all of the Mario games, thanks to the power of the Wonder Flower, granting him the ability to swat things away with his trunk. In another instance, we’ve seen that it possesses the ability to warp reality. In one portion of the video, a number of pipes had come to life, moving up and down as Mario navigated them.

We also saw several other playable characters, in addition to Mario, that included Peach, Luigi, Toad, and Daisy. Yoshi was also seen, but Mario was riding him, so we doubt he’ll be playable. Super Mario Bros. Wonder also features a 4-player couch co-op, which is nice to see that more developers are embracing this again.

While the art style looks to be an evolution from that of New Super Mario Bros, as the visuals were more details and vivid, we could even see the moments on Mario’s face, allowing us to make out his expressions.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder releases for the Nintendo Switch on October 20, 2023.
