Is Bandai Namco Teasing Tekken 8 or Something Else?

By Keith MitchellAugust 8, 2022
Tekken 8 tease

During EVO 2022′s Tekken 7 segment, Katsuhiro Harada and crew released a very short teaser that took us back to the Tekken 1 Kazuya Mishima ending. You know the one, with him dropping this abusive father, Heihachi Mishima, into a volcano. Following this, Kazuya to the players, the videos switched up to an updated Kazuya with the signature Devil glowing eye and featured the words “Get Ready.”

Get Ready? Get ready for what? Well, that seems to be the question on everyone’s mind. Was this a Tekken 8 tease? Was this a Tekken Tag Tournament 3 tease? A Tekken 1 remaster? I hope this is a Tekken 8 tease, as Tekken 7 has run its course.

Being released in 2015 arcades, then in 2017 for consoles, Tekken 7 has seen a number of updates. Additional characters, balance updates, and even “roll-back netcode updates.” We all know what the last one means. However, it’s time for Tekken 7 to be retired and time for another game to take its place. We’ve already seen King of Fighters XV get a release, and Street Fighter 6 has been announced and will be released in 2023. With Soul Calibur VI being all but dead and other fighting games that have either seen a follow-up or with a new follow-up up in the wind, Tekken 8 needs to be a thing. It’s time for a new Tekken.

No one outside of Bandai Namco knows the answer, as everyone was left on this colossal cliffhanger, and it seems we won’t find out more until Gamescom 2022, the 2022 Tokyo Game Show, or perhaps 2022 The Game Awards show. Oddly enough, Harada appears to be indicating that all will be revealed during the 2022 The Game Awards Show.
