Gotham Knights to Skip PS4 and Xbox One

By Keith MitchellMay 10, 2022
Gotham Knights Game Release Date Reveal

Today, WB Games Montréal released a new gameplay trailer for its upcoming title, Gotham Knights. And while the trailer looked amazing and gave us lots of gameplay, we noticed something different this time around. Towards the end of the trailer, it would seem that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are no longer targetted platforms for the title. Meaning, that Gotham Knights will skip both the PS4 and Xbox and in doing so, will leave many players unable to play the game.

Initially, when Gotham Knights was revealed, it was stated that the title would be available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Now, it would seem that the game is only targeting next-generation consoles, in addition to the PC. And while this move will likely be frowned upon, it does make sense. WB says this move was done to “provide players with the best possible gameplay experience.”

We’ve seen in the past that when developers try to focus on both current and next-generation consoles or cross-gen development, the older consoles don’t fare so well. The most recent and perhaps the biggest example being CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077. A title that simply did not perform well (and still doesn’t) on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. I’m sure WB is aware that attempting to cross-develop the game would have likely caused a number of issues, both in the performance and visual departments.

Does Gotham Knights skipping the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One bother or upset you? Or does this move make sense? Let us know in the comments!

Gotham Knights will be released on October 25th, 2022, for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam & Epic Games Store).
