Here’s how to locate the Unalloyed Gold Needle in Elden Ring. You’ll need to find this if you want to complete the Millicent questline.
Once you make your way to Caelid in Elden Ring, head over to Gowry’s Shack, where you’ll be given a quest. There, Sage Gowry wants you to find a needle that’s located in the Swamp of Aeonia.
He needs this needle to save the life of a dying girl who happens to be an invader in that very same swamp. In exchange, he’ll give you the secret to the town Sellia, which happens to have all of its building’s access blocked by a magical barrier.
Where is that unalloyed gold needle
Before you jump in, be forewarned that the same dying girl you’re trying to save is now an invader. A tough invader that hits hard. If you happen to run into this NPC-turned-invader, run. She’s quite strong, and she doesn’t have issues with the Scarlet Rot, unlike you. If you want to fight her, draw her over to some land to make it easier.
However, the needle isn’t actually located in the swamp. Instead, it’s located in the area in Caelid, marked on the map below.
The needle is in the possession of a boss in that area, Commander O’Neil. Who’ll you’ll need to get this needle.
Taking on Commander O’Neil
This fight is straightforward. The Commander will call in ranged troops, about 6 of them, as soon as the fight starts. You can either pick them off or avoid them. I found it easier to use a Spirit Summons and let them fight the Commander while I picked off the troops. This gave me more time to focus on the boss.
During the fight, the Commander will lunge at you and do massive damage if he connects. If you’re a ranged character, it’s best to mount on Torrent to get some easy and safe hits in, then get out. For melee classes, it’s a bit harder as he will also do an AOE that will do Scarlet Rot and will affect you if you get caught. Outside of the lunge, the Commander is a slow-walking guy. Use that to your advantage.
When Commander O’Neil is down to 50%, he’ll call in more troops. This time, the faster ax-wielding types will do more damage. Commander O’Neil’s moveset won’t change, however.
Once he’s down, he’ll drop the Unalloyed Gold Needle, which you’ll need for the quest.
Head back to Gowry’s Shack and give the NPC the Unalloyed Gold Needle.
After a short dialogue, he’ll hand over Sellia’s Secret as promised. He’ll then take the needle and tell you it needs to be repaired, which will take some time. He’ll then ask you to come back later.
However, with the Secret of Sellia in hand, you can head over to Sellia with your newfound knowledge.
