Australian dance-punk band DZ Deathrays announces debut video game Dive Bar Superstars

By Karl SmartOctober 21, 2021

DZ Deathrays announced their surprise video game, Dive Bar Superstars, created from scratch by drummer Simon Ridley during the lockdown. The dance-punk band from Brisbane has bridged the gap between the music industry to the gaming world with a retro-pixel action game where players will rock their way from house parties to the main stage.

Dive Bar Superstars also comes with a twist — players won’t just be able to earn upgrades and unlocks, they’ll be unlocking tracks from DZ Deathrays’ musical catalog to hype up their digital crowds.

Simon was thrilled to bring the band experience to DZ Deathrays’ fans; “I think ultimately we’re always just looking for new and fun ways for us to bring our music to people. The game gives us the opportunity to share a simplified perspective of what it sometimes feels like trying to ‘make it’ in a band. For example: saving up to blow all your money on pyro for a gig is one of the greatest joys of being in a rock band, so it’s cool to be able to share that feeling a little with our fans.”

DZ Deathrays are no strangers to featuring in iconic video games, with several of their spotlight tracks playing in Activision Blizzard’s popular Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series and the recent NHL 22 from EA Sports.

Dive Bar Superstars will be the trio’s first foray into game development and will be launching on both Apple iOS and GooglePlay stores on October 29 and on Steam on November 19.

To celebrate its release, the band will host a live-streamed launch party on Twitch that evening alongside fellow gamer and musician from These New South Wales / Mossy, Jamie Timony. The launch party will also be joined by a few secret ANZ-based creators who will invite along with their own communities into the chat as they play through Dive Bar Superstars and discuss the new game with the band.

For those who also want to enjoy DZ’s music live, the trio will be touring early next year. Grab tickets from dzdeathrays.com and check out their tour dates below:
