The Story
In this volume, Akane is having a bit of a problem with her neighbor, who is a streamer. They used to be polite and played with some FPS pros, but he wasn’t getting anywhere, so he joined a noob-friendly game and used trash-talking and mediocre skills to become a top player there. He gained some followers, but he streamed well into the night, unable to keep his voice down, and it made Akane lose sleep. Yamada lets her stay at his place and enlists the services of Tani-san. Of course, Tani-san is more than happy to help “Fake Rio-Rio,” so he gathers up team Red Fox and hatches a plan to harass our streamer, Pandora-of-the-Dawn, within his game!
As that situation is being dealt with, Yamada is dealing with a situation of his own… girls constantly taking pictures and recording him on their phones. It bothers Akane, but Yamada plays it off because he doesn’t truly care about any of it. He only hopes that he looks strong in their videos. This happens during an outing when Akane pulls him away from harassing her noisy neighbor (although she has no idea that’s what’s happening), and they check out a couple of movies together: One at a theater, and one back at Yamada’s place.
Once the Pandora situation blows over, Yamada goes to meet a member of FoS at school, as it was their graduation day. This leads us back into the world of FoS, where the guild comes up with an RTA dungeon event! Once the event concludes, Akane is about to go back to Yamada’s place when she runs into a certain woman there. Did Akane just accidentally meet someone who could make her nerves stand on end?
Characters
The major focus in this volume was on our new character, Pandora-of-the-Dawn. Outside of what I described of him in the Story section, there isn’t much to him. He’s just a guy starved for online attention, so he decided to degenerate into an annoying streamer who was only pretending to be good at FPS games by playing a game made for noobs…. Like shooting fish in a barrel with an RPG launcher. Watching him get harassed by both Team Red Fox and property management was hilarious… and the short verbal exchange between Tani-san and Pandora at the end was also just as hilarious.
We then got to meet Yukari Subaki, the girl that Akane was going to meet for graduation. Akane didn’t know what she looked like, as she only met her while playing FoS. Their meet-up was a bit awkward as Akane had no idea who she was, but Yukari already kind of knew Akane (how? Well, there is a tie-in earlier in the volume). It was a bit weird to see them introduce themselves, but that’s how it goes when you’re not completely sure of the person you’re supposed to meet with avatars and text being your only interactions. But once the ice was broken, things seemed to smooth out. It was just a “nice to put a face to a name” moment, and I’m sure this isn’t the last we’ll see of Yukari in real life, either.
Final Thoughts
I will be honest… the cliffhanger in Volume 6 made me worry about Akane. I never expected it to develop into a noisy streamer neighbor storyline. At the same time, I am a bit relieved that nothing was wrong with her health-wise, because you know how it goes in slice-of-life stories. If this were a power fantasy story, Akane could take a laser to the chest, have a hole blown through it, and somehow power up and win. In a slice-of-life series, if a character so much as coughs, you start sweating as if you’re being held at gunpoint where no matter what answer you give, it’s over. Of course, in a lot of series, a cliffhanger usually turns out to be nothing major, and while I wouldn’t say a noisy neighbor causing sleep deprivation is major, it’s still a bit of a concern, so I’m glad they got it handled.
Also, we got to see Yamada and Akane take their relationship to a new level… if you know what I mean… and… hey, wait. What chapter did this take place in?
Heh…
Nice…
*ahem*
Yes… It was nice to see them further their relationship, and I love how Tani-san had to be locked in a cage for, um, obvious reasons.
Looks like we’ll be spending time with another new character… one that Akane is going to have to navigate… perhaps with caution? We’ll have to see how it plays out, but I’m sure that it’s not going to be a big deal… or will it?
