Manga Review: Chainsaw Man Vol. 6

By Josh PiedraAugust 14, 2021
Chainsaw Man

Title: Chainsaw Man Vol. 6
Author: Tatsuki Fujimoto
Publisher: Viz Media
Language: English
Format: Paperback
Pages: 192
Genre: Action, Horror, Sci-Fi
Publication Date: August 3, 2021

The Story

Volume six of Chainsaw Man was nearly all-action from beginning to end. It starts off with a kiss from Reze to Denji that was a little more hardcore than one would expect… i.e. she bit off Denji’s tongue and then tried to kill him. Beam helps Denji escape to a training facility; however, Reze follows them and goes nuts, killing nearly everyone inside.

In the meantime, Aki helped Denji escape from there until he’s been given enough blood to revive. From here on out, it’s Denji vs Reze in what seems like an impossible fight. Reze is incredibly strong and her devil, Bomb, can cause almost anything and anyone to explode… including herself. Heck, she can even cut off her own human head and use that as a bomb as well!

During the battle, Typhoon shows up which allows Reze to fall back. The action continues and Denji eventually catches up with Reze where they finish their battle. The outcome of it wasn’t something I expected, yet, it was something that I did. I know that doesn’t make much sense but you’ll understand what I mean when you read it for yourself. It just plays into Denji’s character so well!

The volume ends with a little bit of background information on Reze.

Characters

Reze took center stage here. We got to see her powers on full display as she proved to be one of the most formidable foes that Denji has faced thus far. I still loved how through it all, Denji still liked her despite Reze admitting that everything she did to flirt with Denji was all a lie for the sake of her mission of killing him. Denji really needs to get laid about a thousand times!

When we get her backstory, they talk about an old Russian fairy tale about children without parents being locked in some military room and used for experimentation. Well, turns out that the fairy tale was true and Reze was one of those children. On the surface, this just seems like an odd backstory but the fact that she’s a devil, makes you wonder if these devils are truly being created by humanity? For a shallow explanation that took up all but a single page of the volume, it really makes you think and wonder just what the true nature of the devils are and how they truly came to be. If Reze is a shining example of this, does this mean that someone is mass producing them?

Does this mean that the Gun Devil is one of these products?

Final Thoughts

The last volume was a bit on the slow side but Volume 6 really changed that in a heartbeat! It was all action from cover to cover, we ended up seeing a bit of Denji evolving his fighting abilities, and we got a bit of a somber ending to it all.

Beam is starting to grow on me as a character, too. Having him parade around as a Denji zealot is fun but the fact remains is that he’s still a devil so seeing him get threatened with death at every turn kind of makes you feel bad for him. All he wants to do is praise his “Lord Chainsaw” and assist him when and where he can… which he does quite nicely in this volume. Heh… Kaiju Battle!

Now that this small arc is over, it’s time to get to the back half of the series. With five volumes left to go, I’m thinking that the focus will be on the Gun Devil from here on out. It’s time to start the build to the finale!
