Fans and Comic Writers Ask For Black Canary HBO Max Series

By Todd BlackApril 10, 2021
Black Canary, #BlackCanaryHBOSeries

If you somehow haven’t noticed, the DC Comics fanbase has been using Twitter to try and get things done whether Warner Bros thinks that certain things “deserve to exist” or not. At first, it started with the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement, which worked. Now, they’re trying to get to #RestoreTheSnyderVerse as well as #ReleaseTheAyer Cut for good measure. But they’re not stopping there. Because ever since the release of Birds of Prey in 2020, fans have wanted to see more of the characters, especially Jurnee Smollett’s Black Canary. So now, on Black Canary’s birthday, they’re trying to pull this off again with #BlackCanaryHBOSeries.

Or, to be a bit more specific, a Black Canary series on HBO Max. Warner Bros has said they’re aiming to do more DC Comics properties on HBO Max and they’ve already started via Titans Season 3, Doom Patrol, the upcoming Peacemaker series by James Gunn, and more are said to be coming. And fans want Black Canary to be on that list. And fans are bringing up all sorts of reasons to bring her back:

"We saw hundreds of actors for her role, and so many did incredible auditions, but when you saw Jurnee, it just drove everyone else out of your mind. I drew, like, 10 stars and exclamation marks next to her name," Margot Robbie told THR.#BlackCanaryHBOSeries pic.twitter.com/wXADwbpevo

Black Canary is a FANTASTIC character and Jurnee gave such a layered performance.

She's one of my favourite castings in a comic book movie and she deserves her own show!#BlackCanaryHBOSeries pic.twitter.com/oJ0IsCloBC

greenlighting a Jurnee Smollett Black Canary HBOMax series should be a no brainer, the demand is there and Jurnee is passionate about the character, it wouldn’t even need a massive budget either

so come on @hbomax do the right thing & put a #BlackCanaryHBOSeries into development pic.twitter.com/tbtTCjEQRW

Now, you might be thinking, “But these are just fans asking for this, what good will that do?” Well, they’re not alone in wanting a #BlackCanaryHBOSeries. Some big-name comic book writers not only want it, they want to write it! Including those who have written Black Canary in the past:

I would do whatever I could to help support and promote a new @hbomax Black Canary series featuring Jurnee Smollett, including mowing lawns for HBO executives.#BlackCanaryHBOSeries

— Gail Simone 💙💛 (@GailSimone) April 10, 2021

Of course! Would love a #BlackCanaryHBOSeries. Especially with the brilliant @jurneesmollett. https://t.co/0hiHbvctEp

— Tom Taylor (@TomTaylorMade) April 10, 2021

Of course I think there should be a #BlackCanaryHBOSeries starring @jurneesmollett especially if @shawnabenson and I can write on it with @GailSimone. Imagine! https://t.co/m5rD3KDAuZ

Yes. https://t.co/o19yoch6F6

So as you can see, there’s a lot of people who want this to happen, and Smollett herself has noted that she would love nothing more than to go and do the role as she truly loves Black Canary.

Whether it happens or not is up for debate, but this movement is already over 7000 tweets just for today and it’s still growing. So this might just become something rather special when all is said and done.
