Sony Confirms It Is Working On A Next-Generation PlayStation VR Headset

Now we can stop asking about a PS5 next-gen VR headset.

Sony has finally acknowledged that VR is heading to the PlayStation 5. When the PlayStation 5 was announced, Sony was tight-lipped on if the console would support the older PlayStation VR hardware and eventually announced that it would. However, this left many wondering if Sony was working on a next-gen version of its VR headset. It turns out that they were, and today, the company has started releasing information on the new VR system. Just don’t expect to see this headset in 2021, as the company has only just started development on it.

Today I’m pleased to share that our next-generation VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5, enabling the ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity. Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset.

While this is just the beginning of the new VR headset information flow, Sony keenly pointed out a huge reveal; the new VR controller. They mention that the company learned a lot while developing the DualSense controller and will be developing its VR headset to match the vision they have for the PS5.

We’re continuing to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation. We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience.

The way I’m interpreting this is that we’ll see a new VR controller. Hopefully, this new experience will incorporate a system similar to that of the Oculus (I refuse to call it Facebook), Rift S/Quest, or even the HTC Vibe controllers. I wasn’t a fan of the PlayStation VR wand controllers and felt that they were limited. So I’m really hoping Sony drops that and does something similar to the more mature VR offerings. Lastly, I’d love a wireless experience, or at the very least as few wires as possible, and headset tracking would also be nice but would likely raise the headset’s price. As a VR enthusiast and someone who’s dabbled with several VR headsets, I’m curious to see how Sony will approach the new headset.

Sure, I would have loved to have seen some hardware, but just acknowledging the next-gen PlayStation VR hardware is enough for me.
