The Story
We wrap up Valentine’s Day. When we left, Nanoha was stressing over finding the perfect time to give Chidori her gift. Thankfully, the others decided to go out to buy something cold to drink, leaving them alone, and that’s when Nanoha makes her move.
Once we get past the holiday, talk of college comes up once again. When Chidori brings up her plans, it makes Nanoha think. They end up having a nice conversation about their futures and what would happen if they were to fall into a long-distance relationship. This helps spark something inside of Nanoha, and she knows that she has a decision to make, but before we get there, it’s time to celebrate their first anniversary as a couple!
They have the idea of going to the aquarium, then grabbing lunch shortly after. Once lunch was finished, they wanted to finish out the day by doing a little shopping; however, things began to go downhill when they arrived at the aquarium, only to find it closed for maintenance. Then, things didn’t go so well at this chic café that they had eyed. To make matters worse, something happens with Nanoha that distracts them from shopping, so they end up spending the majority of their time trying to fix the problem.
When the dust settles, Nanoha makes her decision about her future. Meanwhile, Chidori ends up going to cram school thanks to the results of her mock exam. On her first session, she’s surprised to see Nanoha there!
Characters
There was some nice development here for Chidori and Nanoha’s relationship. Up until now, they have been following the same pattern of acting cute and shy around one another, but I feel as if they took some genuinely big steps here. A few things happened in this volume that gave them a bit of a life shock… one of which was getting split up for their new classes… something neither one of them had truly anticipated, and I believe that this, along with Chidori talking about her college plans, was the spark that Nanoha needed to decide what she’s going to go with her life, and how Chidori would factor into everything.
One of the biggest pieces of growth was when the two of them sat down and seriously discussed letting the cat out of the bag about their relationship. While they didn’t come to a concrete decision now, the fact that they are entertaining the thought shows just how comfortable they are finally getting with one another. It took a while, but it’s nice to see it finally happening.
Final Thoughts
With only three volumes left, setting things up for the end is the right call here. To be fair, that setup began as soon as they began talking about college and the possibility of a long-distance relationship, but rather than mention it here and there and fill in the gaps with some episodic content, that issue took front and center here.
With what we were given, we can kind of see the checklist of things to do before the series wraps up, which, to be honest, isn’t all that much. Chidori and Nanoha need to pick their schools, where they will be staying (if not together), and decide when to tell everyone about their relationship. After that, I believe things will get wrapped up in an epilogue chapter after some sort of time skip. Also, it was teased in the previous volume about the two of them getting married, but I would suspect something like that would be saved for said epilogue.
I would also like to think that we might see another one of their anniversaries either before or during the epilogue, since there were a few mentions of “on our next anniversary, let’s…” here. Whenever it was mentioned, it made the two of them think about the future and what that would mean for one another. This is a classic foreshadowing that we will see another anniversary celebration between them, showing us that they were worried about nothing, but which anniversary will it be, and will it be a dating anniversary or a wedding anniversary?
Still a little bit to go, but the end is in sight! Let’s see what Volume 11 brings around and how it begins to connect the remaining dots!
