January PS Plus Games Include ‘Shadow of the Tomb Raider’

With a new year comes new PlayStation Plus games. Okay, technically they come every month, but still, we might as well celebrate. And for subscribers of PS Plus, the lineup is a strong one, with a lot of variety. Up for download we have Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Greedfall, and for those with a PlayStation 5, Maneater. If you have yet to purchase a PS5, you can still claim Maneater and then play it as a PS Plus member whenever you procure the new console.

But let’s check out what we have on offer for the new year.

It feels like a while ago, but just this past July we saw Rise of the Tomb Raider on PS Plus. Now, we have the game’s sequel and the final part of the rebooted Lara Croft trilogy, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, arriving on PS Plus. This time around, Lara trades snowy Siberia for the lush jungles of South America as she races to save the world from the apocalypse. With challenge tombs, puzzles, and stealth, the game expands upon the mechanics of the series. In our review, we said, “Perhaps the best title in the series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a shining example of taking the best of the rebooted series, improving on it and letting it speak for itself.”

Inspired by 17th century Baroque art and developed by Spiders (the studio, not the arachnid), Greedfall is a fantasy RPG in which players explore a remote island. With the island inhabited by locals protected by supernatural beings and colonized by various factions of invading settlers, players find themselves caught in various conflicts in which they can use stealth, diplomacy, deception, and other tactics to survive.

After the Jaws series made sharks out to be the bad guys, Tripwire Interactive decided to even the score with Maneater. In the shark simulation, players inhabit the shoes, er, gills, of a bull shark and evade the predators (that’s us) who are out to get her. In the open-world game, the shark will have to hunt for food and evade even bigger predators, not just bigger boats. We previously checked out Maneater last year at PAX East, and found that “surprisingly, this game is wildly chaotic and visceral but also educational.”

So there year have it, everything from exploring Mayan ruins to a magical island to the deep blue sea. As I said, PS Plus gives us something to celebrate this year with a solid lineup. PS Plus subscribers can download Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Greedfall, and Maneater until February 1st, according to the PlayStation Blog.
