State of Play Recap: Final Fantasy VII, Monster Hunter, and More

By Diego PerezMay 9, 2019
State of Play

State of Play episode 2 just wrapped up, and Sony delivered a lot of information in a short time. We got a new look at the MediEvil remake, saw some new indie titles as well as a new game from PlayStation Worldwide Studios, and even got to see the re-reveal of a beloved title we hadn’t heard about in a while.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne

The episode opened with a trailer for Iceborne, the upcoming expansion to Monster Hunter World. Monster Hunter World featured a wide array of diverse biomes and locales to hunt in, but lacked cold arctic regions that fan favorite monsters like Zamtrios and Lagombi would traditionally inhabit. Iceborne will provide a vast icy landscape filled to the brim with new monsters, new armor, and new weapons. The new trailer showed off some new monsters, including returning favorite Nargacuga and Velkhana, the expansion’s flagship monster. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne releases on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 6, 2019.

Riverbond

Riverbond is a dungeon crawler featuring four-player cooperative play, a cute pixel art style, and a bunch of crossover characters from other popular indie titles. Representatives from Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, Bastion, Shovel Knight, and even Psychonauts all make an appearance. Riverbond launches on PlayStation 4 later this summer.

Predator Hunting Grounds

Prior to this episode, Sony teased a new project from Playstation Worldwide Studios, and it turned out to be a Predator game. Predator Hunting Grounds is an asymmetric multiplayer shooter that pits a squad of soldiers against the predator, similar to the Friday the 13th game. The game is slated for launch sometime in 2020.

MediEvil

We got a look at the upcoming MediEvil remake, including some cutscenes and a bunch of gameplay. We hadn’t seen much of this title since its initial reveal at PSX 2017, but luckily fans won’t have to wait much longer to get their hands on it. MediEvil launches on PlayStation 4 on October 25, 2019.

AWAY: The Survival Series

AWAY: The Survival Series was definitely the strangest thing to come out of this episode of State of Play. Drawing inspiration from nature documentaries, it’s an animal-based adventure game where you play as a sugar glider. AWAY is coming to both PlayStation 4 and PC, but there’s no release date as of now.

Days of Play Limited Edition PS4

For those of you who are into limited edition consoles, Sony unveiled this sleek steel Days of Play PlayStation 4. It comes with a 1TB hard drive and a matching Dualshock 4 controller. If last year’s Days of Play special edition console is anything to go by, then expect this system to hit store shelves in June for a price of $299.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

To close out this episode of State of Play, we got a look at the remake of Final Fantasy VII, which was first unveiled at Sony’s E3 2015 press conference. The game has been facing a myriad of development issues, resulting in the team reportedly starting development over from scratch. We got a good look at some story segments as well as some gameplay, culminating with a teaser stating more information will come in June, presumably at Square Enix’s E3 press conference.

When he's not playing video games, Diego's talking about video games, and he does both a lot.
