In ’12 Minutes,’ Daisy Ridley and James McAvoy are Trapped in a Time Loop

By Andrew AgressSeptember 5, 2020
Twelve Minutes

GamesCom may have ended last week, but there are still trailers and new games to peruse. During the convention, Annapurna Interactive debuted a cast reveal trailer for a new time-bending game. That’s right, Tenet, you’re not the only new work about getting stuck in a time loop (I’m assuming that’s what Tenet is about, it’s something to do with time warps). In Twelve Minutes, you play as a man stuck in a time loop, as a police detective accuses your wife of murder and then proceeds to beat you to death. Whereupon, like a twelve minute version of Groundhog Day, you’re back at the start of the twelve minute cycle, this time with the power to potentially alter the trajectory of events.

In the game by Luis Antonio, Daisy Ridley and James McAvoy star as the couple, with Willem Dafoe as the detective. Annapurna Interactive, which also published the indie hits Journey and What Remains of Edith Finch, describes Twelve Minutes as an “interactive narrative that blends the dream-like suspense of THE SHINING with the claustrophobia of REAR WINDOW and the fragmented structure of MEMENTO.” Fans of The Shining will catch a reference to the Kubrick horror classic in the above trailer, as the hallway outside the apartment has the same carpet pattern as the infamous Overlook Hotel.

Twelve Minutes will debut on the upcoming Xbox Series X as well as on PC and Xbox One. According to the game’s website, it will arrive “very likely” in 2020.

A big fan of Final Fantasy VII, Uncharted, and Metal Gear Solid, Andrew loves great stories and any and all things horror flavored. He also works in the world of interactive theater, its own kind of gaming. Andrew gets his powers from listening to indie folk music and drinking aloe water.
