I’ve been a fighting game fan for years and although I’m a more casual player, Virtua Fighter has always been one of my favorite franchises in the genre. I mean one of my favorite game of all time started life as a Virtua Fighter RPG. That’s why when I heard that Ryu Ga Gotoku was taking on the next Virtua Fighter I was immediately excited.
Now at Summer Game Fest 2026, we have finally seen the official reveal of the next game in the series Virtua Fighter Crossroads. However, what was shown might not be what you would usually expect from a Virtua Fighter game or really any fighting game honestly. That being said, this latest trailer immediately turned Virtua Fighter Crossroads into one of my most anticipated titles for next year.
RGG Studio seem to be trying to inject their signature cinematic storytelling into Virtua Fighter, and if they can get anywhere close to the level of storytelling they pull off in the Like a Dragon games. Well, then Virtua Fighter Crossroads has the potential to be something very special, because its reach could extend outside of the typical fighting game community. Of course, as a fighting game first it’s key that they nail those mechanics above all else. If they can do that while telling a great story then this has the potential to be revolutionary not just for the franchise itself but perhaps for the genre as a whole.
On top of this reveal trailer during Summer Game Fest 2026. SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio also held a special present for Virtua Fighter Crossroads that revealed additional information about the game. This has left me very confident in both the narrative and gameplay elements being executed to a very high level.
How Virtua Fighter Is Evolving
Virtua Fighter Crossroads breaks from traditional competitive fighting games by delivering a narrative-driven action-adventure where story and combat seamlessly intertwine. Centered on the theme of “crossroads,” players will experience a high-stakes omnibus narrative through the eyes of four different protagonists, each driven by their own convictions and burdened by their pasts. Along the way, they will be able to explore a living, breathing city filled with activities and choice encounters. Choices made in and out of battle forge alliances, determine consequences, and shape destinies.
Throughout the story, players will experience a variety of intense combat situations, complete with multi-opponent brawls and boss encounters. This distinct mode will live alongside a robust Versus mode experience, featuring a full suite of local and online options. The control scheme also carries forward the streamlined and intuitive design Virtua Fighter is known for, enhancing both tactical depth and visual realism, all while elevating the signature mind games to a whole new level.
But none of that is what really sold me on this game. It was the talent involved on the writing side that make this game an absolute no questions asked must play title for me.
A Gripping Narrative Crafted by Prominent Talent
A team of acclaimed writers across a range of entertainment and genre backgrounds have come together to work on the story for the game, including:

- Lead Writer: Brad Kane
- As Dusk Falls (Lead Writer)—WINNER: Games for Impact, The Game Awards 2022
- Ghost of Tsushima (Writer)—NOMINEE: Game of the Year, The Game Awards 2020
- You vs. Wild: Out Cold (Writer/Co-Producer)—WINNER: Outstanding Interactive Program, 49th Daytime Creative Arts & Lifestyle Emmy Awards

- Scenario Writer: Shinji Yamamoto (Persona 5 Royal, Persona 5, Persona 4: Dancing All Night, Persona 3, Shin Megami Tensei IV, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the King Abaddon)
When it comes to a fighting game, this is next level narrative talent and I can’t wait to see what adventure they have crafted for us. But what do we know about the story of Virtua Fighter Crossroads so far?
Here’s the official synopsis:
In the year 20XX, the Arma Carta ended an era of bloodshed in Vilasapara, allowing the crime syndicates operating there to establish a tenuous balance. Until now.
President Bato has made Vilasapara a key part of his reelection campaign, as he positions the city’s “Vila Fight Fest” as the solution to the country’s economic woes. He seeks to bring the underground fighting tournament to the world stage as a national sport. His plans are probably unrelated to the recent series of attacks on martial artists by a man dubbed The Bakunawa Killer, but who can truly say.
It is at this crossroads that the fates of four strangers will intersect, causing phantoms from decades past begin to stir… and changing the city of Vilasapara forever.
Known as the “City of Martial Arts,” this island city is composed of multiple distinct districts, including a walled central city, entertainment districts, and resort areas. In addition to the main storyline, players can explore various side stories and quests, each featuring unique locations tied to each narrative and highlighting the connections formed with the locals. Richly brought to life by RGG Studio, Vilasapara serves as a melting pot of hidden agendas that shapes the world of this story.
I’m genuinely staggered by the level or narrative based content they seem to be putting into this game, but we know that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio tell fantastic stories. So, I have no reason to doubt them on that front at the moment.
I can’t wait to find out more and eventually get my hands on Virtua Fighter Crossroads when it releases in 2027.
