During Summer Game Fest 2026, Bandai Namco shocked fans of the mecha community by revealing a brand-new Gundam title called Gundam Rogue Orbit. And while it was previously stated that the developer and publisher were working on a fan-favorite sci-fi franchise, what I saw wasn’t exactly the Gundam I know.
When we first see the game, there’s an unfamiliar mecha fighting what looks like some sort of robotic kaiju, along with several smaller robotic beasts. However, it isn’t until the mecha turns its face that we see that familiar Gundam look. That is also when we’re introduced to a new pilot we’ve never seen before named RE-X, who pilots the Gundam Helix. Just who is that, and what exactly is going on here?
For fans already saying, “this isn’t my Gundam,” you can relax a bit, as Gundam Rogue Orbit takes place in a brand-new timeline created specifically for this game. That said, there are still some familiar touches here, including Haro showing up near the end of the trailer. It makes me wonder what else will feel familiar to longtime Gundam fans once Bandai Namco starts showing more.
Bandai Namco is calling this a high-mobility action game, which lines up with what was shown in the trailer. This doesn’t look like a slow, heavy Gundam experience, but something much faster, with melee-focused combat, enemy hordes, massive bosses, and sprawling environments. It also helps explain why the Gundam Helix looks and moves so differently from what some fans may have expected.
While the trailer was enough to get me hyped, it also left me with a ton of questions. What is this new threat? What exactly is RE-X fighting? And how far is Bandai Namco willing to push Gundam away from what fans are used to? Unfortunately, those answers will have to wait until more information is revealed, or until the game is finally released.
More than anything, I didn’t expect to see a new Gundam game show up anytime soon, so this was a genuine surprise. I’m curious, I’m excited, and I’m ready to see where this new Gundam adventure goes next. Also, are we going to get Gunpla for this new Gundam Helix? Please?
Gundam Rogue Orbit is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, with a 2027 release window.
