Owlcat Games is giving fans their first real taste of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, as the closed beta is now live on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Anyone who picked up the Collector’s Edition or Miller’s Pack can jump in and see how the game is shaping up ahead of its Spring 2027 release.
This early build drops players onto Pinkwater Station, where things quickly turn from routine work into a fight for survival. The beta shows off third person combat, zero gravity movement, and the game’s focus on narrative driven choices. You step into the role of a Pinkwater Security mercenary who survived the catastrophe on Eros, then begin building a team to push back against Protogen and its dangerous experiments.
There is a decent slice of character setup here as well. Players can choose between a Belt born female character or an Earth born male character, along with officer or hacker specializations. You are joined by your sibling J and mechanic Zafar as you explore the station, interact with its residents, and get a feel for how life works in a place full of mercenaries trying to get by.
As the story ramps up, the beta shifts into combat and upgrade systems, giving players a look at how progression and encounters will play out. Owlcat is clear that this is still a work in progress, with performance not reflecting the final build, but it is enough to show the direction the game is heading.
If you were hoping to check out what The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is about through this beta, there is a catch. Access is tied to pre-ordering one of the founder’s packs, so you will need to commit early to get in. The closed beta is available now for founders and will continue running up to launch.
Me, I am liking what I have seen so far, and I had no idea this beta was even coming. At this point, I will probably end up pre-ordering just to spend more time with it and see how everything comes together. Personally, after all of the similarities that were drawn between this and Mass Effect, which is one of my favorite gaming series, I want to see it for myself.
