Is Soul Calibur VI A Soft Reboot?

By Keith MitchellDecember 8, 2017
Soul Calibur 6 Soul Caliber VI

Are we revisiting the tale of souls or rewriting it?

Well, we finally got that Soul Calibur announcement that we’ve been all been asking for. But I don’t know if you caught it or not, but there’s seems to be something off about this. During the trailer, we only got glimpses with just Mitsurugi and Sophitia. Not that Sophitia isn’t an important character (SoulCalibur 5), because she is. While they are mainstays of the series, they weren’t the main characters (if that’s an actual thing). That usually centered around the wielders of the Soul Edge.

That meant either Siegfried, Nightmare, Cervantes or another one of them. Oddly enough those characters haven’t been shown. And sure it could be that they’re not really to show them. However, let’s look back at Mitsurugi and Sophitia for a moment. Both are those are, well, a bit younger than I remember them. Hell, in the previous games, Sophitia, has kids. Yet here in Soul Calibur 6, she looks like she’s barely out of her teens. Will she still have her children here?

So what gives? Well, I had given it a bit of thought about this. The only thing I could think of was that it was a reboot of sorts. That would make sense, right? Well, if I’m reading what Bandai Namco is telling us in their recent presser, the game could very be a reboot. Take a look at what was said.

Taking place in the 16th century, revisit the events of the original SOULCALIBUR to uncover hidden truths with a diverse lineup of new and returning characters with their unique fighting styles including series mainstays; Mitsurugi and Sophitia.

See how they say “revisit” the events of the original Soul Calibur? This, to me, is stating that we’re going back in some way or another. Rewriting the history of the series, which also makes sense. Fans of the series have debated for a while that the series had stagnated. So this would be a great way to breathe some new life into the series. I’m also not mad about this either. Just as long as they don’t neglect previous popular characters. Taki, Ivy, Cervantes, Talim, Kilik, among others.

Of course, a lot of this is speculation on my part. But it seems I’m in good company as this is the general theory that many others on the internet also believe. I suppose we’ll find out more (hopefully) during the 2017 PlayStation Experience that takes place from Dec. 8th – 9th, 2017.

Soul Calibur 6 will be available on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, later in 2018.
