There are controversial games, and then there are games that exist purely to indulge in cruelty. A game that was recently brought to my attention, Plantation Simulator, falls squarely into the latter category, and the more I looked at it, the more I kept asking myself how something like this even made it this far. This piece of crap was released onto Steam on May 12, 2026, and it’s still available to be purchased. I’m not even going to leave a link to the title, but I’m sure you can find it for yourself.
“Plantation Simulator is a simple farming simulator where you motivate workers to pick your crops! Maintain a beautiful farm by repairing fences to keep workers focused. Choose multiple crops to grow and enhance upgrades to maximize your success!”
That description already sounds bad enough, but then you get to the mature content description, and that’s when the mask comes completely off.
Mature Content Description
The developers describe the content like this:
“In this game, you will be whipping black people to keep your farm productive. If you whip your black person too much, they will die.”
There is no way to dress this up as harmless, funny, edgy, or historically accurate. This is a game where the cruelty is not implied or hidden, and it isn’t being used to teach anyone anything. It is the selling point, and whether the developer wants to hide behind “historical accuracy” or whatever excuse they choose, the result is the same: there is no meaningful educational value here, no thoughtful examination of slavery, systemic racism, or history. It is exploitation wrapped in shock value.
I put this in the same category as games centered around school shootings, airport massacres, or sexual assault fantasies. At some point, developers stop pushing boundaries and start making products that cater to the worst impulses imaginable. That is not edgy, artistic, or brave. It is trash. And of course, if seeing a white plantation owner in a white top hat walking around with a whip, violently abusing enslaved Black people, does not make someone uncomfortable or frustrated, I honestly do not know what will.
As a gamer, this really frustrates me. But as a gamer who also happens to be Black, this angers and terrifies me, because we are seeing people act like it is okay to do something as brazen as this and toss it onto a major gaming platform like it is just another joke. Gaming is supposed to be fun, and yes, it can tell emotional stories, explore difficult topics, and force players to confront uncomfortable truths. But Plantation Simulator does not appear interested in any of that. From everything shown so far, the entire hook is allowing players to abuse enslaved Black people for amusement.
What makes this even worse is the climate we currently live in. Racism and hate speech are already amplified online daily, and the last thing gaming needs is a title that gives people an outlet to roleplay slavery and racial violence for fun. If this were any other marginalized group being targeted in this way, the backlash would be immediate and loud. That same energy needs to exist here, because this is not something that should be shrugged off or dismissed as just another offensive game.
Developers constantly argue that games deserve to be treated as art, and I agree with that. But with that comes responsibility, because not every idea deserves a platform, and not every concept should be defended under the banner of “creative freedom.” Sometimes something is just vile. The developer behind this should be barred from the industry, because there is a difference between making uncomfortable art and creating interactive hate-fantasy garbage designed to provoke outrage and attract the worst audience imaginable.
Now, I know Valve gets a lot of criticism for what gets approved on Steam, and to be fair, there have been times when the company has done the right thing and removed garbage from the platform. But then there are situations like this, where a title like Plantation Simulator is allowed to exist, and it makes people wonder what exactly is going through the minds of the people running the platform. At this point, I implore Valve to take a serious look at this game and remove it from Steam, because turning the abuse and murder of enslaved Black people into a game mechanic is absolutely a line that should not be crossed.
This is not the kind of future gaming should embrace, and if the industry wants to be taken seriously, then it needs to stop pretending that everything deserves a pass just because someone slapped the word “simulator” on it. If this bothers you as much as it bothers me, take a moment to sit with why, then let Valve know exactly where you stand and ask them to remove it from Steam.
