Mr. Ga..err Karate is stepping in his stride in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. He gets a new stage that probably is a shining beacon to the style he masters and calls his own – Kyokogen Karate. Now, if these were the same person.
As for the stage, Bouna Vista Dojo, has a bit of a Italian feel to it, doesn’t it? even the name. Just like a certain.. nevermind. Takuma and Ryo have taken the mantle in the Sakazaki family, but this one seems to be different.
Mr. Karate has been in several games before in both the Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury franchises as the mystery man wearing the tengu mask as a boss. He’s also made an appearance in Bukiri One and King of Fighters: Maximum Impact as Ryo. Even in Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition. He’s usually the scarier boss in games such as SNK vs Capcom SVC Chaos. He’s pretty deadly when he needs to be. Nearly on Shin Akuma’s level.
The cool part about Mr. Karate is the fact that his projectiles have the same style as Art of Fighting’s original game’s run for Ryo and Robert. His Rev version stops short, but he can also charge up his original to be bigger.
He’s got some crazier tools such as negation move that can block projectiles and throw in a counter on hit with one move. He also has a dash move similar to Blue Mary’s Quick Steps after certain moves.
Mr. Karate’s Rev Blow on the ground is a straight punch, but he seems to be getting a version of Robert’s Hien Ryuujin Kyaku with extra hits for his aerial Rev Blow. He also has a move that feels like an Art of Fighting callback in the form of a power-up animation.
In Art of Fighting, all super and special moves take up a meter that is given at the start of the match. Characters can replenish it by using a power up move similar to something out of Dragon Ball Z. The style and groove was brought to King of Fighters and Capcom vs SNK series, but specials were omitted from taking up meter. Mr. Karate also gets rapid fire kicks Gen’ei Kyaku. Haou Shokouken super fireball and Ryuuko Renbu rush are his supers here, too.
Mr. Karate will be strictly business as the second last DLC character for Season 2 on May 27th. Kenshiro from Fist Of The North Star is definitely next to round out the the final touches next month. Nightmare Geese, Kim Jae Hoon, Krauser, and Blue Mary, showed us that South Town remembers the classics. Now, to figure out who he REALLY is.
Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is currently available for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam).
